Testing the Beast (iND F10 M5 dyno, quarter mile, road course) (with video)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com 527 wheel hp Today we visited AMS Performance, our technology partner for this project, to dyno test the M5 in stock form. BMW does not fail to impress, as the sound and performance of our M5 during the dyno test was stellar even before we installed any modifications! The M5 roared to life on AMS’ dynojet with a mere 450 miles on the odometer and we looked on in anticipation. The original exhaust is somewhat conservative in sound and tone but the S63tu engine did still create a promising roar as our M5’s wheels spun the dyno rollers for the first of what is sure to be many tests. We were excited to see that the M5 performed flawlessly, even after 40 minutes of dyno runs. Best of all was of course the power number- 527 wheel horsepower! Of course, a power output figure is not relevant without weight! As an added bonus we set the M5 on AMS’ Longacre scales to get a good real-world weight figure. With a half a tank of gas our M5 weighed in at a “stately” 4,313lbs! We will be addressing the car’s weight very soon. We performed datalogging of intake air temperature, throttle position, boost pressure, engine oil temperature, and water temperature to start. We will continue to gather data as we test the M5 and will use the information to further develop and perfect the super sedan. Stay tuned for updates!

We used 4th and 3rd gear, but found that the runs in 3rd gear were substantially more consistent. 4th gear runs would result in ~15 horsepower deltas between runs as well as noticeably different power curves and areas under the curve, while 3rd gear runs remained very consistent throughout.

So I guess it is safe to say that the 20-25% less power rumor prior to breakin service is BS? Assuming that you skipped that step?

Impressive numbers. It would mean that the car in stock form is over 600hp at the crank? Would BMW underestimate the HP that much on the car?

BMW often runs cars to redline on chassis dynos before shipping cars to the customer and ultimately break-in is complete very soon after an engine is first run. With that being said, I would still suggest that our clients follow BMW's suggested break-in procedure simply from a liability and warranty standpoint, but our own M5 will be modified well beyond the point where any future resale is possible, so break-in is not a concern for us. I do believe that 4th gear's longer operating time on the dyno resulted in a touch more compensation for temperature and heat soak. This is likely why results were inconsistent in 4th. Ultimately our goal was to obtain a repeatable and consistent data set that we can use as a benchmark against future tests. Quote:

I was thinking that it was closer to 500 in an earlier test.
I will say this again. I don't think necessarily that the engines are underrated. I think BMW has made the drivetrains substantially more efficient. Last edited by bimmerjph; 09-05-2012 at 10:48 PM.. |

560 crank horsepower down to 527.. A bit of under rating but not HUGE
What type of dyno was it? Could be a high reading dyno.. So this is all totally believable :/ |

I've always seen people use 1.21 on BMW's?? E9x M3's typically dyno around 330-340, which works out perfectly. BMW blown engines are WAY underrated. The N54's seem to be pushing 350 crank HP and the 1M even more. The N55 seem to be putting out a little less than the N54's, but still more than the 300 HP it's listed at. This engine is CRAZY underrated!! But the torque definitely drops off as the revs go up. . .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
