2013 M5 Misfire on Cyl 2 & 3
Hi Guys,
Recently bought an F10 2013 M5, coming from an E63 M6 the power delivery and technology is amazing. However, the misfire started right after adding mods, downpipes and Jb4. In the meantime the car has been reverted to stock. The misfire and dtmal comes up on cold starts, but it goes away after driving a while and doesn't come back until next startup. On rare occasions the dtmal will come back up when normal cruising on the highway. What could cause this behavious, or rather which is more likely that it's always the same cylinder. Cyl 2 always misfires, and cyl 3 seldom. |

exactly what i had when i got my stock 2013 M5 . The Service tech had dropped the coil while replacing the plugs during a service befoer handover. Car cruised fine ...but a bit of throttle and CEL limp mode come on...replacing one coil and a plug fixed it. (took BMW 2 days to diagnose...would have taken an indy about 5 minutes)

Thanks for all the response guys, much appreciated.
To give you more details on the car, since I bought it I have done around 4000kms, and now sitting on 53000kms. The plugs were changed at 39000kms. Is your money still on plugs and coils? Out of curiosity is iy better to replace all 8 or just defective ones, since surely the rest is soon to follow |

Just replace the failed coil and plug..only other thing it could be is the injector - start cheapest part and work your way up if it doesn't fix it.. you could always take it to BMW labour for replacement of any of these parts is pretty cheap

Okay update.
I had a look via rheingolds misfire detection, it seems when the throttle is blipped it will up the misfire counter but doesn't throw a code. I replaced cyl 1 and 2 coilpack yesterday and waited for the mornings coldstart to see if the issue is still there. This morning I hooked up rheingold again first to see how badly it misfires when in coldstart. Started the car and after 30 seconds dtmal comes up again, cyl 2 again. Strange thing counter only showed a single misfire, so I assume it's more strict on cold start due to emissions? Anyways, issue didn't disappear although it did idle better. I will now swap sparks around to see if issue follows. PS: did a highpressure fuel pump test via rheingold and all was okay |

Plug, coil, or injector in the offending cylinder. If none solve it, then it could be a leaky valve stem, or damaged ring/piston.
Is the car smoking or burning oil? If you start it and rev to 2 or 2.5k immediately on start does it still misfire?

Update.
So replaced coils on the problematic cylinders, issue presisted. Upong further reading I see a lot of people claimed a software from dealers solved the issue. So I went ahead and updated the car to the newest istep version and the issue is now hidden. The reason I say hidden is because the errors do not pop up anymore, however I can still feel the idling being a little too rough. Another thing I noticed is that the fuel pumps are very audible from the back, and sounds like a worn out ball bearing spinning, this is on idle and driving, left turns make them go soft again until I drive in a straight line again,so very strange. |

No this seems to have somewhat prevented misfires on some occasions, but not always.

Is the software easily obtainable online? Can you also do a DCT relearn with it?
If you are not smelling any excess black smoke and fuel smell I doubt its injector its possibly the fuel pump. You would also possibly get some O2 codes or mixture codes with bad injectors. Its probably the fuel pump or the fuel pressure sensor I think there was some issues on that too. Keep us updated and good luck |

Yes the software is obtainable online, not always easy as you have to search. You need rheingold, esys and the newest datens. Rheingold is the diagnostics tool, along with relearning your dct. You can reset all sorts of adaptations with it as well. Esys you can upgrade your software or do coding. |

With esys you can code the cars, you will also find tutorials and cheat sheets with what you can code online. |

I ended up replacing all spark plugs, and since then all seems well. That being said I still get misfires around 4500 on acceleration but I think the car might be running lean, have added jb4 and only sometimes misfires around 4500

Yes still getting codes, still the same.
But the irratic idling is gone, I have also gapped the plugs to. 22 if I remember correctly. That being said my trims are being maxed out at 44 on map 1, so going to install meth to see if misfire dissappears. Had the car on the dyno, made 415wkw and 879nm of torque. Most of my issues are now basically related to high gear low rpm pull bordering on lunging |
