Thumbs down BMW Extended Warranty

Hi all,

Looking to see if anyone has had any experience with claiming on the BMW Extended Warranty?

I have just picked my car up from service and they are claiming that the fuel filer cap is not covered (the tether has broken) and neither is the update to the CBS (condition based servicing?) to show that the brakes are not worn (iDrive is saying that they need replaced soon but visual inspection shows they are only half worn).

The former i am not too bothered about but the latter is as it is annoying as every time i sit in the car that it bongs at me. Is it something an indy can do or even something i could do myself to reset the light or update the software? I am loathed to pay my local dealer as they are rubbish and i wouldn't trust them as far as i can throw them.

Firstly, the warranty coverage varies country by country, so you need to read the warranty legalese. Here in the US, there are 3 versions of extended warranty you can buy. The basic is just powertrain.

So regarding the CBS issue, the brake warning is driven by the brake wear sensors. It's simply just an estimate provided by the sensor. From my experience with the E70 X5 and E90 M3, the sensors are reasonably accurate. When it goes off, my rotors generally have been at minimum thickness. Now the pads may still be okay, but if you're changing rotors, you generally change the pads too. From my experience the pads always have a ton of life left when rotors needed replacing.

So have you measured the rotors too?

I have the comprehensive one - what that covers in the UK I am finding is not a lot. I think for the renewal I will just go for the drive train one as if something goes wrong that's going to be the most costly to fix.

Regarding the brakes it was actually the dealer that told me they are half worn and that they don't need replacing and that I am fine for another couple of years (I only do 5k miles a year at the most in this car). I presume that they would have checked the rotor thickness but cant be certain. What they did say was that a CBS update would reset the iDrive and it would then show an accurate 10k/12k until brake pads required attention.

The fact that they don't want to sell me a new set of rotors or pads makes me think that I don't need them at all - otherwise i am sure they would have jumped at the chance to bill me!

Like any warranty they only cover broken components that shouldn't normally break during normal use. The tether for the fuel filler cap isn't something that's not expected to break, after all your likely to be using that quite often depending on how you drive. You'll also find that it cost more to complete the paperwork required than the part.

I've also found that non M specialist dealers aren't that interested in keeping you happy as a customer. As they don't expect you to become more than just a service customer.

The current comprehensive BMW insured warranty covers wear and tear up to 100,000 miles. Go to the website and download the pdf and take it to to the dealer.

I recently bought an M5 2014 with 40k on the clock. It still has service pack left until 50k so next service is on BMW sometime next year but the 3 year warranty ran out earlier this year.

I did some research on BMW extended warranty and realised that what they are offering is a lot more expensive than going third party which I finally selected. There are many 3rd party warranty providers in the UK and I ultimately went with MotorEasy. Their most comprehensive plan was £943 vs £1650 for BMW's plan. My main concern was that the repair if required should be carried out by BMW and under my policy I have the option to go to authorised BMW service centre. So it should be a good balance between the cost and peace of mind.

Of course, I will find out how good it is when something goes wrong (hope not) but from what I read on the internet the service is good usually.

Hope this helps.
