Would you keep M5 after warranty?

Assume you have about 35,000 miles on the car at the four year point when the warranty expires. Extended warranty is too expensive to get. Do you think you could keep it another 2-3 years without problems or is that a receipe for disaster? Conversely would anyone by a 4 year old M5 with no warranty?

At that point you are obviously assuming the risk of damage and could mitigate that by getting your own warranty. Nobody here can tell you what may or may not happen though I have generally seen many folks here fairly ok through 50,000 miles but that's not a significant enough sample to rely upon from your perspective.

With respect to someone purchasing it, of course, it happens all the time.

Saleability will be an issue potentially without warranty ext. IMO..

MCarsFan wins again!

Resale-ability is one huge factor. For me and other who have gone beyond 50,000 miles before 4 years, it's a matter of uncertainty due to the age of the car. In Sept of 2016 when American 2013 M5's are four years old we will get a better idea of the kinds of issues that F10 M5's will have. I have very good feelings that these F10's are solid cars for the future though. The engine seems solid, the dct even more solid. The only issues I foresee are going to be software related. People don't realize how much code are implanted in these cars and how many processors the car actually have. I personally feel that BMW over engineered the engine to have way more cooling than it needs on an everyday basis meaning a nice long life for the engine. Oh also, depending on how hard the car is driven or launched over the course of its ownership I see the shafts going to the rear wheels failing randomly due to the stress of so much torque.

Sorry buddy..but interesting topic..

I think it's a great motor and I agree drivetrain malfunctions due to torque could be the issue in the long run..

It comes down to resale without the warranty..I get worried when I see the massive depreciation on these machines!

13 M5s even with a warranty have close to halved in value..
I don't believe the market for M5s with no warranty will be that huge..

As an example, early E60 M5s are breaking the $20,000 barrier for high mileage examples..I find the depreciation a little tragic.. Great opportunity for cash buyers though to get an awesome car for very little..

No way, the car becomes a ticking time bomb after the warranty is up. Extend it, or ditch the car.

You do realize this post is 2 yrs old, and he's probably talking about an older v10 model.

My thoughts exactly. Why are people scared of a little mileage

That was a sarcasm. I have one over 50k miles and no warranty. Seems very solid and love driving it.

Kwell.
Yes these are holding up pretty well especially after driving fast. I don't drive hard off the line just normal. If I run it's from a roll and I always try to keep the car clean.

I bought my car last September with 42k mi, currently has 60k mi on the dash. Been out of warranty for 10k miles with no major issues, car has been tuned since 44k mi (first JB4 Stage 1, then full JB4, added BCM later, now flash tuned and catless)

Only two things to break have been the driver door comfort access, I just cut the harness for it and use the drivers side rear door to unlock the car, and the retract for the rear sunshade which I never use.

Mechanically, the car has been solid for me.

I'm not going to cut any harness. If mine went out I'd get it fixed like I did. It's an actuator that does go out. Easy fix bro

My 2013 is CPO and has 33k miles. CPO ends Nov 2018. It'll go up for sake before then if not traded.

Since I broke the 100k mile barrier I'm now out of warrantee. I'm now at 102,500. To celebrate I even switched to a different file of power. If something goes out I'll spend the money to fix it. Our cars are really good. You guys stop worrying about if something breaks. Drive it like you stole it and not be a garage queen. It likes to be a show off. Especially if you come across one of those fancy expensive Italian cars. The smile I get when I beat them is priceless
