Think my fuel pump died yesterday
I was taking my oldest son to the bus stop and got a drive train malfunction error and the car started running rough and was dying so I pulled into a parking lot that was luckily right next to me. Car wouldn't start again. Finally got it towed late last night and dumped it at he dealer. They have a big backlog so I went up and talked to the SA this afternoon. He thinks it is the fuel pump but they are so backlogged they won't be able to tell me anything until COB.
I have been parking the car outside the last couple of weeks since I got the 991 and who knows, maybe it doesn't like that. Shouldn't make any difference and I have been driving it regularly so that I don't have those no driving issues arising. Oh well, this is familiar but with the N55 and N54 engines. If this starts up again I am going to sell the car and it will be my last BMW. I have had such good luck with the car so far I am really surprised this has happened. But then again, I never had problems with the N54 until I had about 22k on it and this car has 16.5k now so if this is the same stuff, it's even worse. |

On the 535 they changed the software, replaced a turbo, replaced the coils and replaced the injectors in that order all from 22k to 40k. I think the injectors were at about 40k. I never had the 535 need to be towed in, it always made it in under it's own power. Not so with the X5, it had to be trucked in twice. It just got really tiresome having the car in the shop so much and the prospect of owning it without a warranty wasn't appealing. |

The thing is, I want to run the mods in cooler weather before I sell it. That is more or less why I hang on to it. That and it can carry 10 bowling balls and the 991 only holds at best three.

You put lots of money to make your car faster and your car is faster now, but you are comparing M5 with 911TTS! That's the reason I said I knew ...

Sorry to hear this. One other thing to consider is that if you haven't been driving it much, F10's don't like short trips or being parked for a long time. With our 550xi, I found that if you let the battery get low due to the above, this precipitates all sorts of faults. If I am not driving it or going on a trip, I put the car on a trickle charger - sounds crazy but seems to have worked for our prior 550xi and X5...
I'd probably park my M5 for a while if I had just gotten a TTS too. |

Bummer. Don't throw in the towel on bmw though. I know the 991 is nice and all but you'll miss slumming it with the Beemer crowd. 😊 Besides you are a valuable piece of this online community so you can't leave. It's forbidden.

What makes the SA think it's the fuel pump?
I would take with a grain of salt an off the cuff diagnosis. See what the techs say.

I got the drive train malfunction message after beating up on a C6 Corvette last week. All I did was a few 140 mph runs and message came on.
Then a few hours later message was gone. |

Thanks for all the replies. They put a low pressure sensor in and were able to start it up and bring it in the garage but once they got it in, it wouldn't start again. They don't know what is going on at this point. They are going to get on it first thing Monday morning.
I have been driving it so that I wouldn't have the no driving issue, this trip was intended to do just that. I used the M5 only and let the Porsche sit for two days last week. I also haven't driven it hard since the last runs I posted back in August. I put plenty of miles on it since then. I think this may have been something just waiting to fail. |

Still waiting to hear from them. The SA this morning said that because the Dinan stuff is on the car they want to put the best diag team on the car. It has to be diagnosed and I told them I want to know what the codes are as soon as they pull them. If it's Dinan related I want to know. I am not sure what is going on at this point since they don't have a code but I don't see how it could be Dinan related when it's just a complete dead failure like this.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with the mods. In the long run though, whatever it turns out to be, can you please keep us posted on the issues and replacement parts and costs. I know everything will be covered under warranty but if you could please keep a log of this stuff that would be very helpful. There are some people who intend on keeping the F10 M5 past it's warranty expiration and having this info will be handy for the future. Thanks bud!

Well it looks like BMW agrees with me since they ordered the fuel pump yesterday and expect to get it in this afternoon. The SA says this may not be the only thing wrong but it's the most obvious. Geez, three days to find out what I already knew the day it broke down.
SOK, I like driving the Porsche. Have to bowl tonight though and I can only get five balls in the car. A two ball in the frunk and a three ball in the back seat. Five is enough for league but no way I could go to a tournament in this car. |

The M5 is fixed, I will be picking it up in the morning. They replaced the fuel pump in the gas tank and that fixed the problem. |

Glad to hear the issue is fixed. I'm wondering if the extra boost can put stress on Fuel pump??? BTW, how much gas you have in tank when you usually fill it up?? I mean do you usually fill the tank up when you have 1/4 or less gas? The reason I'm asking is because the gas is supposed to cool down the Fuel pump and maybe for people (like me) that re-fill the tank when the tank is almost empty (I usually fill it up when the light gets on) this causes the issue!!
