I brought my car into the dealership today for the clunk issue. My primary purpose was to get them to acknowledge the issue and have it "logged into the system", which they did. The technician that drove with me thinks its the spring mounts, and not the springs. The dealership sent a message to BMW Germany, and they are recommending that the dealership replace the rear spring mounts. They're shipping a set from Germany, so they should arrive in two weeks.

Not sure if this is the ultimate fix, or just a trial-and-error exercise. Will keep everyone posted.

They replaced my springs several months ago and it didn't help. I gave up on empty promises and ordered H&R springs yesterday... Because this defect lasts for 1 YEAR now and they don't give estimations on this problem.

Checking again - are guys taking recent deliveries also experiencing this?

You must be very frustrated at this point.

Let us know if the H&R springs solve the clunk issue.

So far the consent is non of the aftermarket springs will "solve" the rear clunk as the "fix" will be the redesigned spring mounts.
It would be pure luck if replacing the current ones will solve the problem (the redesigned ones are not yet available)

No, nothing yet! Maybe March.....?
I brought up the issue last week again, but nothing new.

Very frustrating on a otherwise fantastic car.

Yeah, I agree with you.

I'm surprised that BMW Germany recommended to my dealership that they replace the spring mounts, especially if they've already determined that the mounts need to be redesigned. Seems like a waste of time and money for BMW.

I have the same issue but it doesn't really bother me very much. However, as many of you mentioned, I should let the service department know about it and have it put down on the record. Gotta speak to the SR on Monday since my car's still at the shop waiting for new tire replacement.

re

oct 2012 build and i have it as well. it sounds like its coming from the top of the shock/ spring area...exact sound is a clunk as though someone drops a 10 pd box on the rear dash--everytime it clunks, i find myself looking back at rear dash.

clunking fix

My dealer definitely heard the clunking at 1200 mile service but there is no internal fix within bmw yet. I have heard a fix is coming soon....can anyone attest to this?

The fix is here in the UK.

Had the rear springs and mounts replaced with modified ones. Dealer said fronts apparently need to be done as well which will be next week.

So far so good. Still slight clunk but it is the same now as one with Schnitzer springs. Had a friend who drove mine to confirm it is same as his M5 which has Schnitzer springs.

I am sure the slight clunk is now the norm but after being used to the heavy clunking your mind expects there to be none after modification which would be impossible for such a car.

Is there any way to find out if (and when) the change was added to production? Hard to imagine that BMW had a possible solution, but wouldn't pass it on to new vehicles but instead deal with it in a service campaign later on.

Solution has just happened now. In my opinion alot of people have just accepted the clunk. I had an E92 M3 before hence i knew something was not right so took it to the local dealer who investigated and told me there was a fix on the way. Had to wait 2 months for Germany to sort.

If i was to guess cars built from April 2013 will have modified springs.

There is no re-call issue hence it is up to you to take it up with dealer.
