I remember awhile back, someone said the dealer unlocks add'll performance? If this is true, have you noticed a difference.

I asked during my service and they said nope, nothing to open up or unlock. All horses are at your disposal.

I had the service done a couple of weeks ago
I live 20 min far from a German autobahn, so decide yesterday to check out the car.
I dont know if there is any increase in power but believe me, the power is BRUTAL. I was even scared of how this car can push, so decided to slow down as was night and close to 0 degrees Celsius.
The only other car I have driven with similar power was a Ferrari 599, and believe me, i didnt notice too much difference yesterday.

1200 mile service unlocks launch control and you are now allowed to go above the intial breakin rev limits

you technically can do this at mile one, but is not advised ---BMW may or may not be able to track how much you take it to redline and may or may not be able to use this against you in the case of warranty claims -- lots of former threads on this.

Finally, there is still a recommended limit after 1200 miles until 3 or 5k miles before the car is considered fully broken-in.

Do you have to do it at 1200 miles? and before that can you go past 55mph or rev the car past 3000 rpm?

There's loads of posts on this. you should do it at 1200, it comes up on the service indicator. according to manual you need to stay below 5500 rpm before running in service, which is about 120 mph in these bad boys.

At the Service they change the oil and the rear axle oil and unlock launch control.

After you're ok to rev higher and go faster but not suppose to often until 3000 miles.

Nothing stopping you going mental at any point though, only actual restriction is on launch control.

That is a myth. Nothing is locked. There is no software update as part of the Break In service.

So you could use launch control at day 1?

It does know when it's been serviced though, it could be set to not allow launch control until running in service is done without them having to actually do anything.

Did you try it?

If not it's too late for me to test this, anyone else got a pre running in service F10 M5 to try it on?

Could get it ready with the flag on then let go of accelerator to prove it without actually using it.

LC is NOT locked. I have direct, first hand experience to the contrary. Has anyone here tried to use it and been locked out? If that is the case, maybe my situation is a fluke. Otherwise, I will take experience over speculation.

On the M6. Mine would not launch. (Then again the LC is so freaking complicated maybe I screwed up-lol). Seriously, it really wouldn't. I thought I was crazy but then I remembered I had not had service. Fairly certain I had driven at least 6 miles before trying as well. Anyway, could be wrong on both counts. Your actually did a successful launch before break in?

Yup. I aborted before hitting the 5500 pm in first, but it launched.

I concur.

I successfully LC'd at 320 miles. And at 321 miles....

Before all you break in queens start moaning - I'm OK with it. I generally don't keep cars past 15,000 miles. Just make sure you don't buy mine!

+1, although there may be a perception of unlocking added performance as the switch from temporary fluids will make the car feel different + most owners are likely to start driving it harder after the break in (sort of placebo effect). That speed/acceleration 'fix' wears off with familiarity which drives our need to move to something faster.
