Hahahahha
Weird you have to ask - when I am bored here Well I had 550i 2012 F10 Dinan Stage 2 and loved it for what I bought it for but the car is too fast to be that smooth, soft and silent which did actually add to its stealth but overall couldn't but get the M5. I actually had both for about 1 month till I let go of my 550i which I still miss but not because it was better or even close to an M5 but actually because it was not and has its own luxury niche if you will. If you don't care for these few things: 1. DCT being much faster and sportier than ZF 2. Better handling due too different steering Hydraulic vs EPS in 550i not sure about 2015 still EPS? as X was hydraulic 3. Better tires as non RFT 4. Better exhauste by far as 550i was eerily silent like a Tesla!!!! 5. Bang & Olufsen 6. Wider wheels 295 rear vs 275 ! 7. Differential and Torque Vectoring 8. Launch Control 9. Better aesthetics with side and front grills 10. Stopping distance and performance rotors and Brembo M Calipers 11. Better colors 12. Much better status 13 . Better overall track performance 14. Same gas mileage and probably slightly better in the M5 and I have no idea why!! If driven same way I got 25-26 mpg highway in M5 and no way that high in 550i. 15. Slightly Lower stance 16. Less likelihood of wanting to spend money on mods to make it what it's not "an M" - 17. Zero to 60 mph 3.7 sec and Qmile 11.7 18. Alcantara Headliner 19. Better seats 20. wowing people everywhere you go 21. Missing your M when on a vacation and wanting to go back so badly to M-indulge 22. Fighting with M3/M4 community trying to prove superiority of your M5/M6 machine over theirs all the time for the next few years with the incurred risk of being BANNED from your favorite forum just because you love your M5 more than the rest of the M's and being fanatic about and M-Love blinded - 23. Different Bushings and Dampers 24. M buttons on steering wheel and the array of buttons to control Suspension, Steering , Throttle and Drivelogic! ! 25. Superior M mode Heads up display (Go see it) 26. More tickets 27. Better wheels 343 or 601 if CP 28. Competition Package as an option 29. More special BMW dealership treatment as you have their best car! 30. Seeing 200 mark on your odometer 31. Having traction issues at gear 1 and 2 everytime you try to floor till you give up and learn how to modulate your throttle and behave 32. Higher insurance Premium being a Petrol or Piston head - 33. Last but not the least loads of more horses and torque regardless what Dinan has to say as Tqu 580 of Dinan Stage 2 felt like nothing compared to humble 501 of M5 which feels like 200 more which is actually close to reality !! And Dinan still can work on M5 and has stage 2 rolled out already - though I am unimpressed and not interested ! He has good hardware but software I would stay away ! (To each his own however) Should I go on? If all of the above mean nothing to you or not enough to shell 30-35k more then you will be happy with 550i - Last edited by soooma; 07-27-2014 at 03:54 AM.. |

Beside the different engines and HP/TQ:
Different body kits (bumpers and fenders), different Seats, different Instrument clusters, different Transmissions, different Differentials, different Suspensions, different Braking systems (including rotors and calipers),... I remember somewhere in this forum, I said two different animals and a guy quoted that I'm exaggerating, but It's the reality... they are totally different! If you are looking for luxury sedan 550i is your pick, but if you are looking for a luxury-sporty sedan, then go for M5 and enjoy the ultimate driving machine To me even DCT by itself worth a lot You can ask people (like @Soooma) who have(had) both of them to give you exact different feeling they have when they drive 550i vs M5. I had 650i and now I have M6, I feel A LOT difference, and I test drove both 550i and M5... the same as 650i vs M6!

LOL
I disagree but you are hilarious It wasn't a POS but rather wasn't for you and wasn't your taste and wasn't a driver's car and trust me not everyone behind the wheel is like you - some people (I was one) want to be completely disconnected like feel.nothingbandncar does everything for them !! |

As others have pointed out, the differences go far beyond HP ratings. You need to go drive the M5, followed by the 550. If the 550 isn't a major letdown after driving the M5, then save yourself a bunch of cash and get the 550.

You don't get in the M5: fog lights or active cruise control + stop & go (which is really helpful commuting in heavy traffic). I wish we had what the 14 Mercedes E63 AMG has which also does automated steering control in addition to an active cruise technology.
