BMW navigation saved the day!!!

So i'm driving about 90 through The mountains in Virginia near Blue ridge a d got a warning from the navigation "dangerous traffic conditions ahead" "disabled vehicle ahead" and watched the "!" On the map approaching. At the exact point the "!" Showed, state trooper sitting there with the radar gun!! Saved my butt! Haha. I thought that was pretty damn awesome.

The state trooper was probably crestfallen when you drove by at legal speed.

Wow! That's got to be one in a million. Does anyone know where the BMW system gets its information from. Would be interesting to know where/how it gets its information.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that VA Troopers are fighting back against Waze by reporting false information and removing police reports on the app by using it themselves. I reported a cop on the App the other day and when I drive past the same spot about 30 minutes later the report was gone but the cops were still there.

I know that in Miami, police have admitted to using such tactics on Waze.

Correct. Here's a recent piece on Autoblog. http://www.autoblog.com/2015/02/06/p...isinformation/

Google purchased Waze for approximately $1 Billion, so I'm hopeful they stand firm with their investment. Obviously, the police aspect is only part of what their app provides, but for many users it's the most important feature. I'm actually disappointed Google hasn't already done more with Waze. Occasionally on Google Maps, you will see a traffic message "as reported by a Waze user" or something similar.

What a nice break!! But be careful exceeding the speed limit in VA - I understand it's not too difficult to get jail time by going 20mph over the limit (i think). The Jalopnik web site has a few stories regarding the details - and I believe a MLB player served time recently for speeding in VA.
Be safe out there!

I can confirm that it is extremely dangerous to speed in VA unless you want a ticket. It is definitely a police state. I have heard about people literally being taken to jail for speeding. No personal experience thankfully. I have also heard there is a movement by law enforcement to ban the Waze feature that pinpoints the location of police. I would be very surprised if VA wasn't spearheading this effort. It is after all the only state in the US to ban radar detectors.

Actually when the news story first broke in the media. They stated that VA Troopers were the ones who initially contacted Google to remove that feature from Waze, stating the incident that occurred in NYC as the reason for wanting to protect police officers in the field.

I personally know an M4 owner that has gone to jail at least a couple of times for speeding in VA. It literally amazes me that with the laws that Virginia has the absolute disregard of these laws I see on a daily basis within state borders by the common motorist. I literally try my hardest to not get pissed off every day while driving my M5 below the speed limit on all highways and roads in VA. Everyone does about 15-25mph over the speed limit on the highways, and I seem to attract the ass-clowns that try to cut me off and get in front of me. Just yesterday some idiot in a BMW X5 decided to stay on my ass on an on-ramp even though I'm already doing 10mph over the limit and then proceeds to maneuver his way in front of me just so he can go a little faster than traffic on the highway. So either way, there's just no winning in Virginia. Try to obey the speed limit and people drive like assholes around, try to keep up with traffic and stay away from bad drivers and you run the risk of going to jail. I think Virginia needs to secede from the Union and becomes its own country.

I suspected that this was happening. I have talked to people in VA that said the same thing you have said. I try not to drive there much but I have to with a lot of my friends living there and other interest in the state.....

OP I am surprise you survived VA is a unforgiving State which I view as being close to the Gestapo from WWII....

Very nice save! I agree with some of the statements above, it's the only state where both radar and laser jammers are illegal and wouldn't be surprised if they're leading the effort to ban Waze alerts. Only a matter of time before Escort Live is targeted. I guess speeding tickets are one way to fund your state. It's beautiful there, but I remember when I lived in NY and used to drive south along the coast, I was tempted to drive through Kentucky to try and avoid VA.

It wasn't me in the X5 Dave, I swear! I respect the beast!

Ten mph over the limit is my absolute max in VA and that is IF and only IF there are other people on the road driving faster than that. I too see many people every day driving 20 or more mph over the speed limit in VA. They are either incredibly brave, or incredibly stupid. Also, as I understand it, if you are caught reckless driving, which 20 mph over would certainly be, the fines are higher if you are a VA resident. Crazy.

You ever see those shows where dogs (or some animal) was abused and mistreated while it was in some animal shelter or kennel? Then someone comes and rescues the animal and puts it back in it's natural habitat only to find the animal at first is somewhat reluctant to venture out b/c of fear/paranoia based on their past experience. However, after gaining their spirit back and seeing other animals enjoy their freedom, they adjust to being normal again.

Well, that's what's it's like being a driver in VA...until you leave that abusive kennel of a state and see that wasn't normal. When I got back to TX after leaving VA and saw my ## mph on the freeway was slightly below the normal flow of traffic and I better get my $h!t together quick or risk being banished to the right lane, I knew VA was the perfect mix of purgatory and hell monitored by LE gargoyles... Ok, maybe that was a bit dramatic and clearly I'm scarred, but you get my point that VA is the f'ing worst...

Well shit then, I must have gotten lucky. Was in VA on Saturday morning, just left the DMV driving back to DC and hopped on the 270, ended up in the EZ Pass express lane somehow, alone... with no other cars, and "accidentally" sped up... as I was coming around the bend, I saw a trooper sitting on the left shoulder, by the time I reacted I knew he clocked me at 90MPH... I got pissed, thinking he's about to pull me over but he didn't budge.

I forgot to turn my Waze on, so upon launching the app after passing him, he was in fact already flagged by another Waze user.

Stupid of me, but yet so lucky.... F VA.
