To all - I don't know how this DIY's were started with these directions.

Its absolutely earier to pull the whole airbox IMO. There's literally a single Torx bolt holding the box in. Loosen the flathead screw on the jubilee clip post MAF and the whole box pops out and provides easy access to screw 7.
Can you post a pic of this?
Thanks.

Here's a pic from anothers post, but you can see it in the corner. Its next to screw 5.

Removed that single Torx screw, being careful not to drop it into the pit of despair.

Loosen the jubilee clip post MAF and remove the snake hose with convolutions.

Pop the single top clip/hook of the ducting air coming from the grill and lift straight up.

Thanks. I see what you mean. I have to bring the car for break in service soon and will see if they can remove them at the dealer. If not I will take care of it. If I get into trouble I can be in Buckhead in 10 minutes so maybe we can meet up.

I re-read this thread today after a couple months and still not sure I understand the reason/benefit of the charcoal filter deletion. Can someone shed some light? If it is helping in some way, I'd also be interested in removing it right away.

Engine breathes better. The filters are pretty restrictive. Don't know if there were any dyno results for the F10, on the other e60 m5 it was about 15whp IIRC.

Thank you, I'll get started on this mod in the holidays.

I had a dropsie...anyone know the p/n of a new airbox screw or have an extra they good help a guy out with?

If not, I'll call my SA and see if he can scrounge one up for me. Driver side...seems the ONLY one that didn't have the stop to keep it retained.

Did not hit the ground but fell down and I'm hoping it'll fall out on my first drive. Grrrr..

Plus side is I got the charcoal filters out by removing that single Torx bolt and pulling the whole airbox out.

Edit: Found a new screw at GetBMWParts.com p/n:13717545438

I just did mine using this method, and it was super easy. I sprayed soapy water on the rubber pieces on each strut tower to make them easier to move, but other than that -- really straightforward, and with no special tools required.

I read somewhere that the M6 has a plate, the M5 has a snorkle... not sure why they have different airbox internal pieces blocking that but thats been the trend.

Do you just pull the rubbers pieces off or do you need to unscrew it?

Removal of Air Filter Box.

DESIGNED TO BE REMOVED AS PER BELOW!

REMOVAL

1) disconnect air-intake connector just passed the air box.
2) SINGLE Hex on the outside of the box (BIG) remove, careful DO NOT DROP.
3) Remove stowed hoses from the clips
4) Look in the front there is a LEVER press away from the box and lift up gently.
5) Now you don't have to kill yourself disassembling the box.

Reinstall:

The box should separate from the front right at the BOX. (You tube video shows the incorrect additional intake that should remain in the car, disconnect and attach back before placing box back)
They slide in from the top.

Reverse above order to reinstall.

PS I just removed my charcoal secondary air filters.

i) turbo suction noise more prominent
ii) revup feels swifter
iii) I do NOT see any power gains. (Gauges in Car).
iv) Have Akrapovich Titanium Ex. It sounds a touch brighter, NOT Louder.

Some people same EMISSION Part for USA.....I wonder?!?!?!
$360 for one so DO NOT TROW AWAY if taking it out!

The gauges in the car are set by the ECU dependent on accelerator position, load etc etc and wont be effected by this.

I believe that even if you have a remap the gauges wont change as they are not based on real world readings only pre-set input data

That is very helpful information. I have been driving with them out for two days......
I feel like there maybe a little bit more turbo-lag, but once active the turbos feel quicker to rev up.

I did mine and changed filter and sure turbo louder but didn't notice any extra power, lag or butt dyno results, but at our power level 5-10hp would be hard to tell

Useful.
I guess they are installed only in US to prevent fumes escaping to environment when car is off.

I have a Canadian car and it sounds like this was only needed for US cars, do you guys think there is any advantage for me to do this just to change to either the BMC or the K&N drop in filter? Eventually, I do plan on going Dinan or may be RK for intake but maybe I could free up some flow changing my filter for now?

Does anyone know what the snorkel is for and why the M6 has a blocked off plate instead?

I found it quicker to use a flexible extension to get to the hard to reach bolt than to pull the entire air box.

NEIKO 00239A Flexible Extension Bar Set | 2 Piece | 1/4" x 6" & 3/8" x 8” https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B001223O...ing=UTF8&psc=1

This set is for light duty and perfect for this application.
