The traction on the M5 sucks in the snow but the one great thing about these cars is that you know exactly what is happening with them all the time in slippery road conditions. You learn quickly not to over estimate the car and how to swing the ass back in when it lets go. Oh yes and remember to turn traction control off or you can't climb more than a 3% slope. We're Canadian eh we get it here in the great white north.

Wow... nice pictures sir! You have one of the best M5 (MCB + MT) in the world... I don't know if you have driven the M5 DCT yet to compare with your car, but I believe due to longer gears (especially first gear which is almost 20%) and a little better weight distribution, your car must have better traction than M5/M6 DTC to jump off the line on dry road; however it still has lots of fun on snow/rain

M6- You know I respect you, but common. The difference in static weight distribution amounts to 7 pounds. This is equivalent to about a gallon of gas in the tank, or a slighter heavier driver. Compared to the weight transfer under hard acceleration, it is fundamentally irrelevant.

I do agree that the MT is great fun in the snow. Loved finding big snowy parking lots when I had my M39 M5.

Igor long time no see!!! I guess im the only chicken that didnt want to put snow tires on mine, bim14 also put the winter setup on his. How did she handle the snow with those tires on? I left mine locked up and took the X5 out!

Bonz, I do respect you too and I know you have good technical knowledge.
M5 MT is 33 lb lighter and has better weight distribution. (52.3/47.7 for MT and 52.5/47.5 for DCT)... also has longer gear ratio ( thanks for letting me know that higher number is called shorter ratio ) in first 4 gear where the major traction issue of M5/M6 is appeared;

Thanks for making me double check. Actually, the MCT has more weight on the rear wheels by 7 lbs. (4387*.475)-(4354*.477)=7lbs. So while the MT has slightly closer to 50/50 wt distribution, it is 7 lbs lighter in the rear. But again, 7 lbs is insignificant taking into account the the hundreds of pounds of weight transfer that occurs under hard acceleration.

Even though the MT has taller gearing, both cars can easily light up the rear tires off the line, so it still comes down to good traction and pedal modulation. You are right, the taller gearing should help a bit with this, but in the hands of equally skilled drivers, it doesn't really matter.

Bonz, the point I was trying to make by mentioning the 33 lb lighter weight of MT was "weight distribution" ... I'm not gonna go to the detail of calculation (and I know you know all details better than me), but basically the amount of force at rear wheel of M5 DCT (that causes the acceleration) is much more than M5 MT if both DCT and MT have the same drivetrain loss. As I mentioned before, the amount of torque at rear wheel of M5 DCT is about 20% more at first gear and 8% at second gear, 7.5% at third gear , etc. You are right about skilled drivers, but I don't think we are all skilled drivers (at least I don't claim I am ); so it should be more about the car and not the driver when I said in my first post that MT has better traction...

You are right. Peak torque at the rear wheels is more with the DCT due to the lower gearing (in the lower gears), but that's at WOT under load. If one were to floor either car off the line, the only result is wheel spin.

Does the taller gearing in the MT help the driver modulate wheel spin? Perhaps - but I would suggest having a real (foot operated) clutch is a more significant advantage.

MT guys do argue that clutch modulation is an advantage off the line, but the DCT equipped cars always fare better in tests. I wonder if this is due to launch control. It would be interesting to see a drag race between MT and DCT cars without using LC in the DCT car.
