M5 and M6 Gran Coupe....what's the point?

Seriously.....why build both these cars?

So you can make an extra $30k of contribution margin per vehicle from those who have consumer surplus and are willing to trade it for a slightly sportier and more distinctive look.

Same idea between Merc offering an E63 and CLS63. Some people want a sleek looking 4 door(CLS) and some prefer the more usable E63

In my opinion, these are two very different cars as far as usefulness goes. M5 is WAY more functional. The grand coupe is in line with the MB CLS.

I rode around in a CLS for 3 days this week while on vacation in Thailand and effing hated it. So cramped in the back seat. I literally had to duck my head every time I wanted to looks out the window.

Although they look similiar on paper, the 6 Series is a different car from the 5 Series in both look and feel. Below are pics of and M5 & M6 Coupe. The 6GC is closer to the 6 Coupe in height.

And the GranCoupe is a very different car to the 6Coupe. Hence chassis designation F06 and not F12 or F14.

GC is way overpriced. Here in Canada it is around 40k$ more than m5 or cls63. I understand it is better looking than m5, but not 40k$ better. Fully loaded 650GC is 10k more expensive than fully loaded M5.

It's more expensive than it should be considering it's not that much different from what it's based on, but still a nice design.

One aspect of the GC design I do not like is the fact that it has no sunroof. The large glass roof is fantastic on the 650.

The chassis and equipment is much closer to the 6er coupe than the 5er sedan. BMW's model nomenclature is unique to each model, just like the F01 and F02 versions of the 7er sedan. The number assigned to the model is part of a sequential numbering system which is assigned at the beginning of design phase. The plan to develop a Gran Coupe predates the F10 Sedan, F11 Touring, F12 Convertible, and the F13 Coupe. So basically the 6er coupe is based on the Gran Coupe.

I shouldn't knock it too much. There is a good chance I will switch to an M6 Gran Coupe in the fall - but I am skeptical there will be any performance advantage - I suspect the M6GC will weigh more than the M5 and we know it has the same power train.

Don't forget CL63, C63, S63, SL63, ML63, GL63, G63.

And the amazing R63 minivan.

Oh and also CL65, SL65, S65, G65.

Oh and also Black Series for each of those cars.

Oh and also the up and coming S600 Pullman series which is replacing Maybach.

Compare to mercedes, BMW doesn't have many upper trim cars at all, not even half as many.

I actually think the 5 looks better than the 6. The 5 has a stout muscular build, more taut. The 6 seems larger and lazier
