Tuning + warranty concerns, how real is the risk?

Hello everyone!

I just purchased an M6 CP and wanted to tune the car. There are flash tunes or piggybacks, and we all know which are safer, and which are not.

The max psi the S63TU can handle is 22.7 and most tunes (Bootmod3, PP, Dinan, ESS, etc) stay below that, even stage 3. The only real tune that isn't detectable is a piggyback right? So what's the real risk with a flash tune? If something happened to the motor, you would most likely be screwed but how likely is it ?

Expert opinions wanted!

The hole in the DMEs is easily felt, even with a sticker covering it. Most of these dealers know what to look for. I'm in the same boat and went with a JB4. If anything happens then I can always remove it. You can put the JB4 in map 0, but my last M5 was flagged because they popped the hood and saw it was installed.

What if they don't drill and the tune can get flashed back to stock?

Only other way to flash the S63tu DME's other than drilling is to physical open the cases, they are well glued together so will bare witness to this process, so again detectable.

As in if the tuner was to open the DME and flash it?

This strugggle is Real man !!

here in S fla a large # of cars have been flaggged and it suck's cock and balls.. Dealers here are just looking for reasons to flag shit seems like these days..

i wanted a flash as well on my brand new 16 and after hearing and seeing numerous flag scenerio's decided against her.. jbc , bcm , dwnpies , msr intakes , strait pipes should be a conservative 630whp and im goood !

my S/A was the one that advised me togo w jb4/bc4 as in map 0 they can just jump w obd and its all good , obv for major issues where there is a chance of a regional rep coming out to inspect the car it'll be pulled out and brought to stock before even seeing a dealer .. way better to be safe than sorry.

My 0.02 cent's

Issues here too lately with the site.

From what I've learned, there is no way of avoiding bmw will know if you messed with the ECU. But again, if you have an issue, it still has to be the cause of the issue to void the warranty. I had an issue on my previous M6, which bmw knew was modded, but they fixed my car under warranty since they deemed it unrelated to the mods.

Do we know anyone here who has been 'flagged' yet or is this all stemming from that thread over at M3post?

I've had dealer work done over the last few weeks that has used the scan tool and everything has been approved with no issues - including misfire scenarios that required BMW engineers from BMW NA's approval to work on it.

I brought my car into the dealer last year because of a blown differential. They fixed it without issue, even though I had a JB4 installed. I later found out my car was flagged because of the JB4 and was no longer eligible for CPO or extended warranty through BMW. None of this was ever brought to my attention at the time.

Okay, but that was an external device hooked up to your car that was then flagged by someone at the dealer who saw it - and actually made note and then recorded it to your car (assuming that's how it went down). I can understand that.

I guess I'm more talking about this new program that can 'see' a flash tune when the car is hooked up to the tool and then data is secretly transmitted to BMW.

So are they flagging to void warranties or for future warranties? Sounds like as long as the mod isn't the cause of the problem, you should still be covered... But still a risk and possible legal battle if it comes down to it.

Contact Alex at Mission Performance tuning or Mike at BPM tuning. You wont be disappointed at all.
Both are local tuners with great reputations .

bottom line, anything is detectable by the dealer IF they really need to investigate. (Blown motor etc.)

Anyone who says otherwise is flat out lying, or ignorant.

Once you tune the car you get a tampering in the ecu code. You don't get those codes with the jb4.

Its not secret, they have been quite open on reading, retaining and using information while they have financial and contractual liabilities (warranty) to the vehicle.

Yep can be inconsistent when pushing beyond Map 2. Map 8 with meth is nice and consistent and plenty of power to burn your clutches pretty fast
