There I was,...Rte 1,...headed North,...Stafford VA area,....and the early collision went off,...I snapped my head back to the front,...and immediately jumped on those BIG BRAKES! I mean my attention had gotten distracted for abt one to two secs!,....that's all it takes!

Note, I was quite worried about getting rearended!

Thank you BMW!

It does apply brakes - happened to me once.

Details:

The collision warning with braking function complements the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function to offer the driver additional assistance in avoiding potential collisions. The two systems can be activated independently of each other, but are tuned to work with one another when they are both in operation. The collision warning with braking function is based on a two-stage warning concept. The “pre-warning” is limited to a visual signal, which is displayed both in the instrument cluster and in the Head-up Display in the form of a red vehicle symbol, prompting the driver to increase his distance to the vehicle in front. At the same time, the brakes are pre-loaded, the deployment thresholds of the Adaptive Brake Assistant are lowered and the Brake Standby function of DSC activated. In this way, full brake pressure is built up more quickly under emergency braking, and the shorter stopping distances achieved as a result reduce the risk of a rear-end collision. The pre-warning is not used in situations in which Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function is active, as this system already automatically ensures that an appropriate safe distance is restored. The second stage of the collision warning system is activated – regardless of the status of the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function – in the event of a higher level of collision danger. In situations requiring particularly rapid intervention on the part of the driver, the system triggers an acute warning. This consists of both visual and acoustic signals. At the same time, deceleration is initiated; the vehicle is braked at 3 m/s2 for a maximum of 1.2 seconds. Along with the flashing signal in the instrument cluster – and in the Head-up Display, if specified – and a warning tone, the driver is given an unmistakable signal that he needs to react. Thanks to the pre-loading of the brakes, everything is in place here as well to avoid a collision or alleviate the consequences of an impact significantly.

wait allmotor this is weird , had a 13 now a 16 nvr had the brakes applied for me, thank god as i created the warning by following to close or squeezing thru somewhere ata a hi rate of speed that i should'nt have been !

i've seen the big red cars ass in heads up and cluster a bunch of times but nvr experienced actual braking ?

i nvr got an noise from it either ? i can understand the preload thing which would help when we applied the brakes but is this a function i need to activate or something ?

I have seen the 'red car' warning before. Also, one time coming up on a car turning right, where I could tell it was turning out of my way and I was going straight, I cut it close enough that the car began to beep at me.

So the beeping is definitely there at some point. The steering wheel vibrated too, I think. Only happened once.

The automatic braking I haven't seen. I thought that was only if the car has active cruise control, and M5's don't?

It does apply brakes. I've had it do a full panic stop before when a car cut me off. It's a fantastic feature to have. It's too bad my current M5 doesn't have it and the previous one did. The next one will for sure!

I have a 16 and I am pretty sure the brakes were applied for me automatically. Am I imagining things?

ive only seen the warning light up but never experienced braking. That's why I said that. But then again after someone had cut me off I apply brakes myself to decrease the distance. But I do not use that stop and go feature so maybe that was the difference. But perhaps I stand corrected.

Same here I75/85 through downtown Atlanta rushour someone cut me off then stopped. Before I had time to react the car beeped red warning and slammed on the brakes automatically. Scared the $h1t outta me lol. I think it only applies brakes below 25 or 30 mph.

Btw this was in my 14 had the same happen two days ago in my 16 but was going faster and I applied the brakes myself

Active cruise control - this is not the one where the car automatically adjusts speed to maintain the same distance. This is the dumb cruise control right that you are talking about? Because F10 M5 def doesn't have the automatic distance adjustment cruise control. These names are super confusing. Why call it active when it's the "unguided missile" kind.

Wasn't during cruise control - I was otherwise pre-occupied doing a low rate of speed (maybe 20-25mph). Someone stopped in front of me and car slammed on the brakes and prevented a collision. When I mean slammed.... its violent. A human couldn't create that much pressure in that short of a time..!

Hmm, well, my '13 didn't even fake it at trying to apply the brakes. My speed was about 50 mph when the RED CAR appeared and the Audible Alert went off.

One thing for sure,...if the Red Car suddenly appears,...and the audible alert blasts,...one best be ready to jump on the calipers!

Note,...because the vehicles in front of me had stopped,..and I was still traveling at 50 mph or so,...the system detected a high probability of a crash! Therefore,...the Red Car/Audible Alert was more intense,....at least it seems as though it was.

Yep seen it many times and if your speed is under 30mph (I think) you get all that plus your brakes slammed on for you lol

If you don't have active cruise control, it will not automatically brake for you. It will just alert and beep. Collison Warning and Collision Warning with Brake Assist are not the same. Brake assist requires the radar sensors that are used for active cruise. Collison Warning uses a camera to "see" when a collison is imminent but it doesn't apply brakes.

But is active cruise control an option on *any* F10 m5?
