Random check engine light, Charcoal filter removal. Connection?

Hey guys...I saw in another thread some have experienced a random orange check engine light. I wanted to know if there is anyone experiencing the same issue and have removed their charcoal filter.

Mine came on the other day 30 seconds after I started the car as it idled. No information came up on my displays. System check yielded no information. The light randomly went off 40 miles later. Car ran fine while the light was on. 2 days later as I drove normal on the highway, the light came on again. No information on my displays. Car is running normal.

Anyone else experiencing this?

P.S. I also have BMC air filters

Mine (Cdn) car does not even have the charcoal filters right from the factory. No issue.

I had removed my charcoal filter and running on a pair of BMCs too. I had the CEL last Sunday while I took the car out for a roughly 150km cruise. Never sees the light again after another 250km of driving this week so far.

Did you oil the BMC filters? Were they too oily from the factory? Wondering if you fouled the MAF sensors...

I have the stock papers, with no charcoal filters and have run the car very hard in two road rally events with zero issues.

Stock paper filters + Charcoal removal.

I "enjoy" my car, so it is not pampered (but not abused either).

No CEL. Probably 2K miles since removal.

The BMC's were pre oiled. I did not think there was an abundance of oil. I removed the charcoals about 800 miles ago. I put the BMC's in less than 200 miles ago.

Still not a bad thing to check out before you bring it in. I woudl buy a can of MAF cleaner and give them a quick clean. It is a good thing to have anyhow as I like to clean then twice a year.

I don't necessarily agree with you but in the past when I have experienced intake or exhaust reading malfunctions, the code displayed itself and never went away until you hooked into the OBD and cleared it.

Ok. But if you bring the car in with the BMCs and it is dirty MAFs, I assume the stealership will charge you and not do it under warranty.

If you bring the car into BMW with oiled filters, they will blame the issue on that 100%.

Because BMW does not use oiled filters in the F10 M5's airbox, the dealer will say: you cannot put oiled filters into the M5.. cause found, not covered under warranty. clean/replace MAF's and install stock air filters.

That is what they will say and or do.
