Question "Engine temp -- Drive Moderately" What the...

Driving a 2013 M5 with 15K miles on it. Never saw this warning before. Was driving very mellow for about 25-30 miles. Parked the car for about 30 mins, then when I started her back up, this message popped up. Obviously, something's up with the coolant system.

Anyone ever seen this message? ...when driving mellow and NOT beating on it?

Called my SA and taking it in on Monday.

Concerned.

I have got the message "Drive Train" please drive moderately

It was the fuel. I mixed different fuel qualities when driving in different countries

I got the same message a month or so back. I drove for about 10 minutes stopped for an errand and when I started the car back up the message came up. It was -5C outside and oil temp was below normal.

Error went away when I re-started the car and hasn't come up since. I didn't bother with a service appointment.

I just got the "drivetrain malfunction - drive moderately" message today. Last week was the "engine temp" message. Taking to SA tomorrow. Hoping it's just crappy fuel. Just got this car and issues issues issues. Not good.

I had the same message on my previous M5 which was a 2013. Although the message went away I clearly remember the car being at the dealer for several days. One of many issues I had with my 2013; good luck man.

Now in a 15; no issues at 2k miles.

Car back from SA. Their finding was that the coolant level was low but I'm not 100% convinced. Isn't there a "low coolant" alert?

Other question would be why low? Was there a leak?

By chance was the ambient temperature low? I've seen this message twice and both times were when I was in a cold environment and driven just enough to begin to warm up the fluids before shutting it off. Upon return, message appeared. Last time was a few days ago, so popped the hood and felt around. Everything that's usually hot was ice cold except for the metal coolant lines.

I think it's just a reminder that the car has cooled well below normal operating temps.

Yep. That was the exact temp scenario...and same thing with the start and stop. SA reset everything, added coolant and haven't seen the messages since.

I've gotten the coolant alert, if I'm not mistaken coolant shrinks when it's very cold out. If that's the reason it should correct itself.

This isn't really about the coolant level being low or not. For those who had E39, E46, E60, or E9x ///M cars (and those who didn't for that matter) should remember the variable redline limiter that adjusted based on fluid temperatures. Apparently several lawsuits were filed and the feature no longer available or implemented. This "warning" is just what is put in place of instead. For whatever reason it only appears when the ambient temp is low and the oil filter bypass valves have closed and are then again opened within 30mins approx.

So you don't see this warning in the summer?

Home is Miami where all we have is 360 days of summer and 5 days of not as hot. It's only when I've driven to cold climates in winter that I've seen it appear and only after a drive long enough to make the oil temp move a tiny bit, shut down, then return quickly and restart.

S63 has oil filter bypass valves that activate when the oil temp/ambient temp is below a certain point to ensure proper lubrication of critical components.
