BMW does not allow dealers to use ///M cars as loaner cars. Did the car have regular plates on it or dealer plates? Your dealer probably had a Z4 M demo sitting around that they really wanted to put mileage on or something.

I have a loaner right now, it's a base 328i. I drive it the same I drive mine only I floor the 328 more because i'm use to the power of the 335i lol. But since I've had it (it's been 4 days now) I've filled it with premium AND i've hand washed it. Also, I'd imagine a lot of BMW owners are older and have the maturity to not drive the car like an idiot. It's those hoodlum 1 and 3 series owners that destroy everything

I have gotten 750i/Li's, 550GT, X6M, X5d, X5 3.0i/4.8i, 5 Series (550i,535i etc.), 3 Series(335i,335d,328i etc.), 1 Series (135i, 128i)...and generally drive them the same way as I drive my cars.

However, I do think these loaners get neglected a lot more then the company cars i.e. cars driven by the owners, managers etc.

From my understanding there are a few classes of cars

Loaners
Sales Demos
Company Cars
BMW NA/Canada Company Executive Cars

I would be comfortable with the last 2 , but for M cars I would stick with new.

Im surprised that many people would buy the loaners, they're beat to hell, and have zero options. I'd rather get a fully equipped Honda over a bare bones 328i

All that you have to do is call the service manager and explain that you appreciate their fine service, however going forward you need to have a loaner BMW or you will take you business elsewhere. This works every time.

Some M cars are beaten by their owners.

I live in NJ and the dealerships in my area are very high volume. Almost all of their BMW loaners are 328xi. Some of them are in really poor condition inside and out. People beat the hell out of loaners... they treat them much worse than even a crazy M car owner would.

I would never buy a CPO loaner unless it was disclosed and an appropriate discount was given.

I would steer away from these CPOs due to the improper/abuse during break in period!

Well it makes sense financially on bmws part. However, I must agree with several of the prior posts in that most customers beat them to hell knowing its just a loaner, as well as not following the whole break in aspect. I remember a few years back when my friend got an e46 325i loaner from the dealer. We drove it like we stole it.

I don't care how great the deal is, the cars have been beat to sh!t during their loaner life. 95% of BMW owners are not enthusiasts and don't know how to drive properly. Add in to that mix an automatic transmission and you have a successful recipe for the service department to make money when they eventually send the car to the CPO department.

I've actually heard that the M5s from M school in Spartanburg get refurbished and sold as CPO.

If you've ever been, you'd first be shocked at the abuse an M car can take. Then shocked that they'd sell it as CPO after those beatings.

I'm driving a z4 loaner right now. It's so filthy when they gave it to me that I stopped off at the drugstore to buy windex and paper towels. She was like "no animals in the car" and I was like "well, the person before me obviously had a dog, look at the windows. So gross.

I would freak the eff out if I knew my CPO was used as a dealer/loaner car.

Please Read Very Interesting (If you have time)

I bought a CPO Loaner 08 335xi AW Premium, iDrive, Cold, packages from Bobby Rahal BMW. I bought it with 14,051 miles on 06/30/09
Below is all the repairs that it went through:

08/04/09 Horn Does Not Sound (Never Has) Also Left Passenger Seat Belt Tensioner Malfunction.
Conclusion, All malfunctioned parts replaced

11/19/09 Airbag Malfunction, Adaptive headlight Malfunction
Conclusion, All Malfunctioned Parts Replaced

2/6/10 HPFP
Conclusion, Replaced

3/17/10 CEL ON (Multiple Drivability Faults, Misfires, Low Fuel Pressure)
Conclusion: Replacement of Low Pressure Fuel Sensor

3/23/10 CEL ON(Fuel Injectors and Spark PLugs)
Conclusion: Parts replaced

4/15/10 Adaptive Headlight Malfunction
Conclusion: Headlight Replaced

6/01/10 CEL ON (Faults in Cats Bank1 & Bank 2)
Conclusion: New Cat, Bolts, Gaskets

06/29/10 Left Tail Light Malfunction (Bulb is good)
Conclusion: Replaced all bulbs anyways and cleared codes

07/13/10 Both Rear Tail Light Malfunction (Bulbs Good)
Conclusion: Bulb Carriers Replaced

Finally 08/14/10 we make a deal with BMW NA to get me in a different car. They offered $5000 on top of trade in value. Trade in was $27,000 with 30,000mi plus $5000 is $32,000. I paid $37,000. They would not do a buy back because I am not the first owner, which I said BS because dealer owned it before! GRRR! Anyways the dealer is 45 minutes away and with all those repairs gas becomes expensive, also I am 18 so my mom has to go with me to get the loaner car while I drive her car for the time being. Which my mom is not too thrilled about because he has to take time off her business to come with me to get the loaner. Also depreciation from all the miles driven to get to the dealer. Anyways I ended up trading for 2011 335xi Sedan fully loaded for $55,500

I asked the salesman do you have these problems with all these loaners? he replied that in the area that they are in and their customers are all professionals and simply do not have the time to beat on the car. I said hahahah OK, SURRREE.

In conclusion I will NEVER buy a LOANER car EVER again even if it was CPO. Too much wasted time and gas. (well in my case anyways)

Don't remember them saying they CPO the M cars used at the performance center, but they did mention that M cars used at the performance center comes with a disclosure that these M cars were used at the performance center

During the Q & A, they mentioned that the performance center will not use the M cars for more than 2 years. I guess so that these cars can be sold with the balance of the new car warranty

It was also mentioned these M cars get serviced by the book at the performance center's service center

Lucky the "abuse" is the car driven as designed instead of "abuse" as in neglect

What happens to M cars at the performance center doesn't even come close to how M cars owner's drive their M cars at DEs

one point i may make is the fact that you did put 16k miles on the car. That isn't a run around the block in my opinion. Unfortunately, I think this can happen with any premium car unfortunately. There are plenty on here that know the 335 is NOT the most reliable vehicle. I did my research and bought one anyway.

You were unfortunate, even the owner of a 80k range rover can be unfortunate too. Sucks you live so far from a dealer

I've caught the mechanics gunning the shit out of my car during a test drive when I brought it to service at BMW. Turns out that all test drive = pedal to the metal for the mechanics. I usually reset my trip calculator and get a comfortable 20+MPG but after bringing to BMW I get below 15MPG.

This is why I abuse the crap out of the loaner. If they can't show some respect for the owners car then I will disrespect the loaners.

I do know people that do donuts, burnout, neutral drop on their loaner car..

Very True, but my 2011 335xi has is running on 7k miles soon and not a single problem yet, even with the procede I installed at 4k miles. The 08 was fully stock only mod was tint.

Yeah the dealer is far away but that is the dealer of choice for me. The service and people there are unbelievably friendly. There is a dealer 5 miles away from me on the same Blvd. that I am and I totally hate that dealer. I am younger so they don't appreciate my business and they don't want to waste their time with me. I understand because younger kids ruined it by going there just to play around. They are also very aggressive, was going to buy the M3 off them but after the test drive he said shall we get some papers going I said I will be back next week, I still have some decision making. Then the guy got all pissed and angry. I just straight walked out of there.

But I have a friend that works in their detailing department and get free details hahah and someone who is a client of mine working in the parts department and they gives me 20% off anything! So i do occasionally go there for that kind of stuff, or get prices and have my preferred dealer match it.
