M5 Diesel to the US?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I tried searching but couldn't find anything definitive.

Is the 2013 M5 Diesel coming to the US? If it is when is it expected to be in showrooms and how much will it cost?

Thanks!

I can say with almost 100% certainty that there does not exist a "M5" diesel, just the M550d which is NOT an M5 but more a 550i xDrive with a tri-turbo engine. And that car is not coming to the US; some European countries like the UK aren't going to get it.

There's no m5 diesel. Are you talking about the m550d?

Search the homepage for info on it. It's not coming to the US though.

In some respects the M550d isn't so far from a M5... Just 3/10ths difference from 0-62mph (at least on paper).

It's no M5, but it's a new breed of M the M550d

BMW should offer it here unless they are worried it would not sell well.

At the Geneva auto show we interviewed the BMW M President and asked as to the reason the M550d won't be sold in North America. The reason provided was:

Quote:
Even though we see some demand for the tri-turbo diesel M Performance models in the US, the business case didn't make sense for this particular diesel. We have to have 50 state certification and in order to do that for this engine you need SCR technology [Selective Catalytic Reduction(SCR) is a method of converting harmful diesel oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions], which is an expensive thing to engineer for the US market. So even though we see some demand for these models, there has to be some balance between the demand and the engineering costs.

Jason posted the reason above your post. Has to do with a business cost decision it sounds like.

They sell them in some pretty cold places in Europe so I think you are not correct. Must be cost, or the like, related, or not enough love for diesels in the US.

92% of F1x sales in Sweden are diesel models. No problems with Diesel engines here...and we can get really cold winters up north.

So, the 0-62 mph is all that matter, huh?
How about the 0-150 mph? How about taking some corners at high speeds?
It's night and day...

They tested the m550d at www.carmagazine.co.uk go search for it, it's a pig unwilling to take corners.

I've heard car costs in sweden are very high and so too is gas. Prob not going to be many M5's there I expect.

Here right now it is $1.22 USD/l for premium. That is high but I expect your diesel will be not as high as your premium.

Our diesel here is almost as much as premium. Less chance of consumers seeing the value.

You did read that little part of my post that said "in some respects" right?

I've read a few reviews of the M550d, not all of them as negative as that. In a winter test in Norway, the X-drive F10 (not the M550d) did get some flak for it's cornering qualities on icy roads.

As I wrote, it's NO M5, I just pointed out one area where it's not too far from the M5.

Thats too bad, with gas prices rising why would one not consider the i8 instead in 2014. Its in the same price range.
