New Here (Hello), Dinan Stage 1 - No traction!

Hi there. I am new here. I bought a 2013 M5 about 6 months ago and um ... HELLO! LOVE IT. :-D I have had several performance cars before (an 02 Z06, several super tuned F250 trucks, a Dodge SRT10 Viper Truck), and several peppy cars like G35's 300Z's, etc. I told a friend that I wanted a "Fast 4 door" and he recommended this. Holy cow. "Gentleman's Racecar" I have heard ... YEA.

So then I heard about the Dinan tuner. Sign me up! Had that installed and it's amazing, but now I can't keep all the power going to the road! That's not bad either .. until I really want to show the car off and can't get beyond the grips of traction control.

Anyone figured out how to get wider tires on here (even if it means swapping the rims)? I did a search and a little reading but couldn't seem to find anything definitive.

Thanks!

Craig

This has been discussed at length in other threads. Opinions seem to be split as 315s are outside the recommended width for the stock 343s.

How would I determine what rims I have? And what are other options if I were willing to buy rims?

800+ HP here and using 305/30/20 Pirrelli PZeros. Hooks great for a few thousand miles. After that forget it.

R888 will really hook but that's not a daily driver tire.

315 R888 fit nicely on the M5 343M wheels.

305 / 30 / 20 PZero with 99Y loading. If you go 103/108 it will be too wide.

3rd set of PZeros 99Ys on rear 343M tires. Running around 800hp on the crank. No tire with this set up will last so just aim for the best bang for your buck. I might try the R888s for the hell of it but the PZeros have been the best so far.

So maybe just try the PZeros on this rim then?

The MPSS 305/30-20 is a bit too wide in standard or K3 spec for the F10 M5 OEM rear and won't seat on the flange correctly.

I agree - it does bulge some however it's tolerable. Nothing like the PZero

Which specific PZeros and MPSS' are you comparing to make that statement?

305/30-20 (or 305/35-19) aren't necessarily going to be any better than the OE Spec 295 MPSS. Some 305's actually have a smaller contact patch. The big increase in section width just makes it look wider since the bead is bulging on the flange and reducing the contact area further.

I'll make a list and throw it up tomorrow or the following day.

I decided to stay with the stock M5 wheels and fit the best tires for street and track. I was looking to go with 305s like many here however, because I track my car on road courses, lateral grip is most important. So I bought a set of "stock" size Sport Cup 2s and I couldn't be happier. Even though the SC2s are stock size, they are actually a bit wider than same size PSS. Both straight line and lateral grip (tested at Road America) is significantly better. I can go in harder and lean on the exit throttle much more.

On the street I can get into the throttle much earlier and with much greater confidence that it won't "snap" sideways. I've run drag radials and other tires. I think the Toyos are great as are Nitto and MT. For me, the best all around tire for the stock rim (and maybe any rim) is currently the the Michelin Sport Cup 2.

You "can" however I suspect the car will exhibit more under steer. Not really a problem for everyday street driving. You'll enjoy more grip and being able to get on the throttle much more and earlier in the rev range particularly in a straight line and overtaking on the highway. No way I'd run a spilt setup at the track.

Run 265s upfront with 305s and they handle fine. If 275s weren't so pricey I might switch up on the fronts.
