How do you guys turn off your M5 ?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
When your M5 is parked, how do you turn it off ?

I always put in "N" and applied parking brake before turning off ignition.

My friend tells me that I'm supposed to leave it in "D" or "R" with parking brake applied before turning it off. (DCT)

Which is correct way for M5 ?

Leave it in gear with foot on the break and hit the stop once to turn off the motor and the car automatically puts the car in park. Hit stop one more time to turn off all electronics.

We don't -
Well 2 stop/start button pushes with B&O speaker down and just get out of the car and it does take care of the rest for you and it really does.

My radar detector always remains on for avoid a few minutes then switches off on its own too.

I put it in Neutral, jump out, and it activates the auto-stop feature when it hits the wall.

You will find that when you put it into Neutral, and try to turn it off, the car will scream at you about not being happy.

Leave the car in D or R as you come to a stop and turn it off.

if you leave it in N, u need to press button twice

OP:

i leave it in D or R, apply Parking Break and then turn ignition off. this way Parking break holds the car, not your gearbox, which is not good in long term if you park on non-flat surface

dont worry about electronics, once you lock the car, everything shuts down

I agree with using the parking brake. It would be cool if turning the car off automatically deployed the brake.

Mine gets really "turned off" if a Prius parks next to it.

Gear, parking brake, start/stop once. Mine is coded to shut down electronics when I open door.

Occasionally when I attempt to lock, it honks twice - I think this is when I leave it in neutral and shut off. Also acts differently when I have an active bluetooth call - wish it would automatically transfer back to the phone when I turn my car off.

Same here. This is the correct way.

Just tried leaving it on D and pushing the Stop/Start button once and B&O goes down which usually requires 2 pushes on N and I believe this is better..

Only if no long term consequences !

I've found an interesting thing.

When I...
1. put M5 in "N"
2. apply parking break
3. press start/stop button to turn off the engine,
"Auxiliary Ventilation" is always greyed out.

However, when I...
1. put M5 in "D" or "R"
2. apply parking break
3. press start/stop button to turn off the engine,
"Auxiliary Ventilation" is no longer greyed out. It's available to be enabled.
And M5 no longer beeps (warning message) about car can move away with "N" engaged.

The problem with that is what if I'm parked in my garage? I don't lock the car there.

#1. it will turn off on its own anyways after a few minutes.
#2. push the button a second time and everything immediately turns off.

This is kinda standard for all newer BMW's... my 2011 550i, 2013 M5, 2014 M5, and 2014 X1 all operate the same.

That's how my 2011 550i is, too, but I always set the parking brake and leave the (manual) transmission in first gear. My M5 will be my first car ever without a clutch pedal, and the whole idea of "Park" is new to me.

If you press and hold the start/stop button, all the electronics shut down. No need to press twice, just hold it momentarily if that is what you intend to do.
