Used motors are around $14-$16K and a rebuild with forged internals will be around $20-$25K... plus labor for the swap of course.

Many things can cause bent rods from hydrolock to over-revving.

In this case probably just too much torque at low RPMs and possibly pre-ignition. What's the timing set to at MBT?
