Hello,

Anyone else experience a thud/clunk from the rear end, when driving aggressively in 3/4 gear, with the throttle response and trans response dialed up, coming completely off and on the throttle aggressively? Owner manual says drivetrain noise is normal due to torque load/unload. Inspected the diff bolts and bushing, everything seems to be fine. Car is a 2016 Competition with 20k miles CPO with extended warranty. My Indy BMW tech said it was normal and not to worry about it. It definitely sounds like some play in between the bushing and bushing housing. Not sure if that is by design or not.

Your time is greatly appreciated!

JB

I had this as well, recently. It was super easy to reproduce. From a dead stop, put car in drive, hit the gas with some urgency, clunk. Then stop, go in to reverse, gas again, clunk. It was one of the three rubber bushings on the diff mount like you said.

So I replaced all three bushings. It was...expensive at the dealer, $574 for parts and $1395 for labor, got a $294 discount... I'd tell you to hit up allmotor_2000 for his custom reinforced mounts and have a local shop do it. They gotta drop the diff and dealer labor is insane...

Solid diff mount from allmotor_2000 did the trick for me and now I can launch.

It's a 30 min job to swap the diff mount and the diff does not need to come down. Just remove the plate holding the exhaust and hold the DIFF up while replacing the mount. It's very easy...

First sign that something is gonna break... and depends on your luck just the mount will break. Else its the driveshaft, axles, diff...

You could be right. I don't actually know what the shop manual says for the job.

33-14-2-284-039 Adapter, Rear
33-17-2-284-474 Adapter, Front
Couple of bolts

"Replace front diff mount bracket/plate and rear diff mount bracket"

Parts: $570
Labor: $1395

By the time I put any real thought in to it and realized I should have just bought your mounts and had a different shop do it, I was already committed and the repair was in progress.

I have on-board video from the car while it was in the shop--whatever they did, they took a VERY long time to get it done. That guy spent hours on the car.

Dealership took the car in, took the rear end apart, inspected everything and re-torqued everything. Said everything was fine. To be clear it's more of a thud than a clunk. Could it just be the sound of DCT clutch engaging/disengaging? It only happens when I have throttle response on sport plus, trans in S, trans shift response 3 and I'm coming on the throttle aggressively after completely coming off the throttle.
