Took the step - using 10w60 race oil from castrol

So I desperately needed to come up with a solution to this burning oil problem. I was at a stage whereby I am using 1 litre every 800 miles.

So after carrying out some research I have replaced the oil with 10w60 race oil from castrol.

Surprisingly the bottle says Mpower approved.

The car feels a little quieter at idle (engine wise)

Nothing else really to report apart from 250 miles in and the oil measure screen is still showing full.

Lets see what happenss.

On what may be a completely separate note my car seems to pop and bang a lot more exhaust wise. I don't know if this is an age thing or something else?

I'll keep everyone informed on the oil consumption

!!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!
5W-30 is the factory oil
0W-30 is one of the alternative oils

10W-60 was used in the E60 (V10) M5. It's "M Approved" for that model and I believe also for E9X M3's. Defiantly not, not, approved for the F10 M5.

I think putting the 10W-60 in your F10 M5 may cause some issues.

You should read the list of approved S63TU motor oil's in the M5's manual - either from the paper book or electronic manual on the iDrive.

That last part of your post was most disturbing. I hope the piston doesn't shoot out the hood.

It's a risky move on his part I think. On the other hand, there were some M3 owners running 0W-30 instead of 10W-60 in their M3s successfully so who knows what will happen.

Yeah that came to mind, that's why I changed my post to be a little bit less severe

But still very risky to try,

Agree. the risk is that the engine is designed with tighter tolerances than the older engines, and if this is the case, then the thicker oil won't be able to lubricate all parts of the engine effectively. Plus it can't be as effective at startup.

I think his interpretation of increased exhaust noise may be a red flag.

I would recommend the OP to do an oil analysis after 500-1000 miles on this oil and check for metal particles.

I have heard of people switching to 10W-60 for track use on cars designed for 5w-30. However this is when running at extreme temperatures. The challenge for you will be that in day to day driving the oil may not be warm enough to be effective and you could cause engine damage.

BTW here's an article of someone who made a similar switch on a different BMW turbo and he had issues with cyclonic filtration resulting in damage.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...25&postcount=5

I would recommend you do an oil analysis early to see how it is really performing. Many of us use Blackstone labs for oil analysis, not sure if they operate in the UK but I'm sure there are several local labs there.

Also, your warranty may be denied if there's any engine damage. Heck why not try a 2 stroke engine oil? J/k

i wouldn't do it
i have city consumption at 1-1.3k miles
and on long highway trips it doesn't consume oil at all
i keep 1 bottle in the boot all the time and my dealer is only 7miles away, so no hassle for me, whenever i run out of oil, i pass by, get free top-up and another bottle
hopefully u won't have any problems with engine

That's not evidence, and you're reading that out of context. As mentioned, 10w60 is for older M cars. Not the F10.

But hey, it's your car and you're taking the risk. Good luck.

Just a quick post for feedback, 700 miles no oil used averaging 19.0 mpg as opposed to 16.3 mpg previously

The car seems to warm up quicker but that may be due to the warmer weather.
Previously, when I used to switch off the engine the fans would run for some time. Now the fans run for a few seconds which means to me that the turbos are running cooler.

I'll keep you guys posted on developments. Can anyone explain why the oil isn't burning anymore?

short term result may vary. Look for a longer term trial run and see.

I think a 50%/50% mix of 0W-30 and the 10W-60 would be a great mix.
