Rear Suspension Clunking Fixed
My rear clunking issue has been solved on my 10/2012 build. Service Center ordered the parts from Germany which included new rear springs and mounts as well as new front dampers. We have a lot of uneven, bumpy asphalt roads in the northeast and I am very satisfied with the outcome---no more noise over speed bumps or bumpy roads. If anyone has questions as to the the service advisor, I can help you. Repair was done at BMW Port Chester Service Center. I asked if they were going to isse a recall and my SA guessed they wouldnt.

Yep the "fix" is only performed on a "per complaint" basis , no recall is being issued

Can you describe the 'clunking'? Although I've heard of this issue, my build is July 2012 and I've never experienced this for some reason. Is it pretty obvious when going over bumps at 30+ mph?
Thanks. |

I get this going over speed bumps and at other random bumps. I assume this is the clunk that is loud and you look back and think you might have hit something or lost a part . Would love to see what they did if you will share

I hear an annoying noise coming from rear left side (no clunking) but just on certain uneven road surfaces. I went to the dealer 3 times . They removed the rear deck lid and trunk from my car. They thought it's either the seat belt or something inside the panel but got no help. They also checked the clamps by the exhaust and the heat shield they were not loose. I'm thinking its most likely the rear suspension

1)remove and replace rear springs 2) remove and replace rear spring mounts 3) remove and replace front dampers 4) i remember seeing also, "addtional shock" so to be clear, the rear springs and mounts on top are removed and replaced to where the springs now stay attached to the mount--previously, they didnt travel long enough and separated from the mount thus prodcuing the clunk. front dampers are replaced. Over bumps and uneven its like a different car--i find it now much firmer in rear end--car sounds and feels now like the e60 when the f10 in firm setting---i still think the front end setup is a little to soft but that has nothing to do with clunking |

Reported the case of rear noise to service center, they checked and decided to order those parts.
Have it replaced in 1 day and no more noise. i then asked them what abt. the front. they said they couldnt hear any noise (which is true) and they wont replace. So i guess i should wait until if noise appears at the front?

There usually is no front noise. However, it seems there must be new specs on the front or proper dampers. all fixes to address rear clunking involve new front dampers.

Just to make sure I am hearing the same thing if I hit a doped bump or sometimes a pothole etc it almost sounds like something broke off the back end. It is very noticeable and freaks me out every time it happens. I would say it happens 3 or 4 times a month. Sound right?

I have a Feb build 2013, havent heard any clunking. Does that mean it was addressed during production? Do any people with later production dates have the clunk?

I had heard a while ago that the clunking was being addressed on or about DEC 2012 builds. Clunking is apparent when you are travelling at a crawl and go over a moderate size speed bump. You will hear a sound that appears to come from the rear deck lid or upper trunk. You may also hear it a slower speeds over very bumpy roads. the sound is the springs disconnecting from mount then reconnecting.

I fixed this issue 3 months back too. Its not a recall issue and if you complain hard enough, BMW will see to this problem. It's a day's job and its totally free.

Official SIB is forthcoming : SI B33 01 13
Cause : Rear coil springs rebound rate is too aggressive Solution : Replace the rear springs and the front and rear auxiliary springs (bump stops on struts)
