Interesting enough
I had an x5 that every 2-3k used to require a quart..
And babied it during Break In

Whike this M5
I didn't hurt it while In Break In but certainly didn't baby it and was in 5k RPM so often and it was delivered to my hoise after 400 miles of Highway driving !

And now at 8k
I drive it very hard whike not warmed up even red line it because my commutes are shirt and if I wait till warm I won't be able to drive it the way I want once a week !!
Noted that Oil Level Was exactly between Max and Minimum and didn't ask for oil.

Now almost 1k mikes after 7k service (Yes as went early for screen replacement and they did service 2k miles before due- Goooood

Now still at Max and 1k miles after service and I drive it very hard (MPG 15.2 and no traffic - and I use it as DD too !

I believe it is the luck of the draw!
No consistent reports and seems anecdotal to me how you break it in, how you baby it, how you drive it !!
It is M5 meant to be driven like a sports car!! Because it is a sports sedan!!

I had the 3000km service and then I had the oil changed at 7 or 8k I believe, but not one drop of oil has been put in the car by me. At 15,000 km right now.

I made sure to follow the post here somewhere about seating the rings properly right off the lot (well, out of Welt ).

The oil containers I bought in anticipation have dust on them.

17,000 current miles.
Installed BMS tune and GT Haus full catless exhaust system from day 1.
Car is driven hard ALL of the time.
I have never had to add engine oil EVER. Oil level is always full and car performs amazing.

Out of curiosity what is the best and average MPG you see out of the car?

Amen. This is what I use (actually use M1 in all vehicles from Harley to a Duramax Diesel...) Curious, no burning/usage... None in my M5 either with M1 0W-40... No Castrol for me, thank you...

Just got back from the dealer and they had to put in another quart. Got the service message to add a quart asap. Car has 3,000 miles. Break in was 1200. Added a quart around 2000. Now this one was at 3,000. I hope the car still just breaking in and that it doesn't keep burning a quart every thousand miles.

BMW F10 M5 Oil Consumption

I was having to add oil every other fill up. Took my M5 to the dealer just before it went out of warranty with the smell of oil and what sounded like an air leak. The discovered that part of the air filter had been sucked into the engine (vehicle had extended service so only serviced at dealer). After talking to BMW/NA hey replaced both turbos and the catalytic converters. No oil use since with about 2k miles and the oil level remains the same.

However, it may be related to another post (changing to 10W-60). When the 1,200 miles service is performed one of the steps is to recalibrate the oil level sensor for the change from break-in oil to regular oil. It could be that your oil level sensor needs recalibration. It can only be done by the dealer's computer. If it were my car I'd take it to the dealer to have the sensor checked or recalibrated.

Accurate oil capacity of a US spec S63TU B44 engine

If you want to be precisely accurate the complete engine, including the oil in the engine pipes and engine oil cooler is 9,70 liters. However, and for purposes of knowing how much oil can be changed, short of disassembly of the engine, according to BMW (https://wbeista.bmw.com) and how much oil can be added at an oil change, the answer I provided is the same as BMW states--oil quantity in sump:8,00 liters, oil in filter element: 0,50 liters, total: 8,50 liters.

I done oil change every 7000-10000km. in BMW service. I use redline racing 5w40 oil. And every time they put 9,5l oil. Im doing test every kind of way.
Electronic dipstic show full mark add 9,5l. If you put 9,8l dipstic show overfill. When dipstics drops 1 scale and we drain oils out engine oil is 8.0l. And when idrive shows add. 1l liter you had only 7,2l oil. if you add 1l dipstic show full mark. My car dipstic drops 1 scale about 7000km-8000km and every time i add 1l. (last interval is 8200km and dipstic show max. And BMW dealer drain out 8,3l)

in USA you drive low engine oli every time if use only 8,5l
And yes dipstic show max 8,5l but it shows max 9,5l overfilled 9,8l
Thats why many cars (M5 f10) in USA have this oil consuption problem. Oil pressure is to low since day 1 when first oil change is 1200ml and Europe 2000km.

Sorry my very bad english

Since I bought my f10 I wrote down how many km I could drive after adding 1 liter oil.

1. (80300 km) 1 Liter added.
2. (82778 km) 1 Liter added.
3. (84141 km) 1 Liter added.
4. (85581 km) 1 Liter added.
5. (88750 km) 1 Liter added.

From 4-5 I did about 3,000 kilometers before needing another liter of oil, however, those kilometers were made on long highway driving. The other observations (when driving only in the city) seems to do about 1500 km before needing another liter of oil.

I have three S63 engine cars currently, M5 and X5M in Taiwan and M6 in the US, none have oil consumption problems. I don't baby it during break-in but nor do I abuse it. I did a few red-line pulls for the first 200km, and changed oil, and then vary RPM as much as possible for the first 2000km (which meant I avoid freeway driving).

Our n63 x5 used about 1l per 2000
Engine got rebuilt and now drops from high to low mark at around 15000 which is when i service it anyway

My m5 f10 with 95000km on it seems to use a litre every 2000-3000km

My m5 e60 uses about a litre each 1000km
