M5 Pure Metal Edition - Fault Cycle on Dash

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi Guys, been struggling with a recurrent error message while driving brisk and breaking. PEDESTRIAN WARNING, FRONT COLLISION, PARKING BREAK MALFUNCTION - one after the next. At first it was occasionally, now almost every time I drive it. Car has been with dealer for weeks. Got it back today.......bum. AGAIN!

I have been able to reproduce it. Brisk driving followed by weight transfer to front, i.e. breaking (Max ). Also it will trigger when going through a ditch.

They attempted to bypass the harness. Nope still doing it.
Replaced gear selector, (?) nope did not even have to push just cycled .

ERROR MESSAGES: Park Break Reduced, drive moderately seek service.
Frontal Collision Warning

I love this car.......any one else ever get

Water intrusion in the trunk most likely.

I live in Los Angeles, not much water.
I hand wash my car with hose no high pressure.
Dealer switched gear selector module....still faulting now even with just normal driving.

Thanks I really appreciate any input.
I can reproduce it in M1 Mode, with threshold breaking.
Then even the lightest touch will trigger the warnings.

See Video:

https://flic.kr/p/2kLAdnf

PS: Check Engine light came on after the first fault that day. Off now.

The boot is notorious for leaking from plastic cover black that sits over rear break lights (open boot and one each side)

They have a foam donut for the plastic plug to seal against water and it does a terrible job
Unfortunately you will probably break it removing it and even when installing new ones i broke one out of 2
Ended up using silicon sealant to seal it!

Car is back with AD. They kicked it up to BMW NA.
The fault codes asked for "gear selector" replacement. That made things worse.
Again I live in LA, no water. I hand wash my car, just garden hose. It feels like a CPU/DME issue. Pure Metal has different software. i.e. different diff settings, traction control and boost map etc.

Yesterday, after one treshold brake down form 60mph, it started to trigger over and over. Further, power steering assist went dead.

Restart the car.......ALL NORMAL.......

I will keep you guys posted.

Below are all the faults.

I had all those appear once when I accidentally put the car in drive while it was up on the Quickjack (all wheels off the ground). They went away once it was driven. Don't know whether any conclusions can be drawn from that.

Looks like a basic problem is bouncing sensor faults onto other things in sympathy. Damn electronics.

Update: BMW NA asking for replacement of front facing camera. Fault codes point the the KAFAS camera in the mirror than looks at road etc.

OK that was NOT it either.
Parking Brake module replaced -NOT either still same fault codes.

Starting to sound like OBD/Computer. Pending response from BMW engineering

Will update with more once car back.

None of the issues you have have anything to do with "special edition" did you give BMWNA a call? Sometimes that helps with dealer to be more diligent and start digging into the problem.

I disagree: Different software, different OBD/OBC hardware, different diff settings, different boost, different suspension (alu bushings).

All these DO make a difference, BMW NA just offer a Hanky.......
I am patient, the car has been with them for close to a month.

I would love to see where you get all that info from. I know about the software and paint, I can't seem to find anything else. I have one of those too, but it is typical BMW marketing same with the anniversary edition and what they call competition edition in Canada, all were rated 600HP from the factory.

Sure. My info comes from my conversation with M5 Engineer here in US.
The car drives different from standard M5, I have driven both. PM has more grunt and grip out of slow corners. It just feels very well tuned. No funny wight transfers. The 30 Anniversary Edition share all mechanical aspects, except different pain and no alcantara interior. Mechanically they are identical.

Middle of article. The dealer I purchased mine from had no clue what they were selling!

From BMW Group:

M Power: Performance and Handling.

At the heart of the BMW M5 Pure Metal Silver Limited Edition, sits a 4.4 liter, high reving V8 BMW M TwinPower Turbo engine. An increase in boost pressure and targeted modifications to the engine raises the car’s performance vs. the production model by 40 hp to 600 hp. At the same time, maximum torque has increased by 16 lb-ft.

On the BMW M5 Pure Metal Silver Limited Edition, the standard Competiton Package has been enhanced to include 20-inch forged wheels amplifying the perfectly executed balance between performance output and handling. The Competition Package includes a lowering of the vehicle by 0.4 inches and a firmer setup of the spring damper systems and stabilizers. In combination, the specific control setting for the Active M differential fitted as standard on all BMW M5 models ensures ideal traction. The steering system with an M specific Servotronic function comes with a more direct control map, providing the driver with precise response and enhancing the car’s agility when turning into corners. In addition, the M Dynamic Mode of the stability control system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) has been specifically aligned to sporty handling characteristics unique to this special edition model. Typical M driving dynamics guarantee ideal handling and performance on the racetrack as well as in everyday traffic. Standard M Carbon Ceramic Brakes provide additional stopping power.

M Driver’s Package.

The standard M Driver’s Package includes a unique 1-day high performance driving school which has been tailored to driving BMW M vehicles through various exercises on a racetrack to explore the limits of the vehicle in a controlled environment. The driving school is available at the BMW Performance Center East (South Carolina) or West (California). Additionally, the M Driver’s Package increases the vehicle’s top speed from 155 mph to 190 mph.

Beverly Hills BMW/ BMW NA. They took apart the wiring in engine compartment and found this.

FEELING OPTIMISTIC!

We should start a photo album...

My wires looked like that last year after a mouse chewed on a few of my engine wires, oil level sensor wires, and the blue primary rigid gas line.......

Wonder if you drop a few of your under-car panels, if other remnants of a rodent would be found.....

A month without the M to discover that to replace a few inches of chewed wires, at least the techs found it eventually.

It was inside of a sleeve, not chewed likely, manufacturing defect that allowed cross flow......triggering fault.
Crazy......

After three weeks....no faults..
