Repainting: How do you feel?

I was told repainted parts will never look like OEM parts no matter how good the paint job is, and people with professional eyes will be able to tell right off the bat. Some praise OEM paint because there is nothing that will look like it. Is this true?

The reason why I'm asking this is because I went to pick up someone from the airport the other day and the careless person put several chips on my rear bumper while loading the luggage. Even though it might not be a big deal to some, but it makes me "MAD" every time I think about it. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to see if they can fix it; if not, I might repaint it.

2 options:
1) Repaint it.
2) order a new pre painted bumper from Germany.

With a high quality factory authorized bodyshop you should have no issues.

Also you may want to clear bra your rear bumper. I did that the very moment I got my car to avoid exactly this issue.

Nah. A high quality shop can fix it so it looks new, but they will repaint the entire bumper.

The bumper is already a color mismatch from the factory as the paint on plastic will never be a perfect match to metal.

^ Agreed.

Hand spraying is better then robot. Thats why real high end cars and show cars are sprayed, color sanded, wet sanded and buffed by hand.. Machine paint jobs are great if you like orange peel.

Its not like the virgin marry is squeezing out the cars from the factory with perfect paint.. Its cost effective while being presentable not perfect.

OP you will be fine. If the dealer can't fix it they can recommend a good shop.

Enjoy the ride

Aloha

You have been incorrectly informed, repainted metal parts will never look the same, plastics will be fine.

Reason is, there are two types of paint, factory baked and re-finish.

As plastic bumpers aren't able to be baked at high temps, they are painted in re-finish paint, this is the same paint system that body shops use, so no reason why you won't get the same match.

Agree with most of what has been said but in my experience it IS difficult to get both the color AND the metal flake density EXACTLY the same (but doable, potentially). Unfortunately even in a perfect situation I always see a difference ( in my head) when others may not. Again it may be partially psychological but your perception is your reality.......

I'm a picky guy. Some fool side swiped my 09 M3 and I thought the repair shop would never get it right. Wrong! I could never tell it was painted. It was the shop the BMW dealer used for their cars.

Attn all M5 owners:
When picking up anyone from airport, purposely pass them and stop 10ft past. If not possible, stop 10ft before them. Immediately get out to open the trunk and put their bags inside for them.
