Have you tried having the springs replaced with the corrected ones from BMW?

Is it a manufacturing tolerance issue or a design flaw? I.e. will they do a recall or only issue them on request.

How can you tell? I do know that is hasn't got the new navi so i guess it's my 2012.

Really annoying that this isn't solved sooner. The car was build in august. By then this problem was already known by bmw if i read al the online complaints about it.

Some M5 owners in Australia were contacted and asked to bring their cars for spring replacement in December 2012. Not sure if this counts as a recall or not...

Seems like a design flaw - it can't be good for the springs to hit repeatedly the stop above them.

If it was built in August, then it's a 2013... It is certainly disturbing that August builds still have this problem.

Would be good if someone made non lowering springs to solve this. I would change the springs, but don't want to lower or lose ride quality.

F10 rear spring clunk noise

Ok - this is the kind of shiz-nit that I have little tolerance for!

This issue was originally reported for the 2012MY - WTF BMW???

My final production week is slated for the 1st week in Sept 2013, followed by a BMW Welt delivery scheduled for 22 Sept 2012.

I will be if this known product defect has still made it through my Sept 2012 build.

It sounds like the new springs will become available only in December, so I think you're out-of-luck.

I'm in the same boat. Not sure what to do about this. I don't think it makes sense to have to replace the springs on a new car. Also, the dealership technicians who will have to do the replacement have no experience with doing this job on this car. I'm really tempted to let them sell the car I ordered to someone else, and I will place another order when BMW finally starts installing the proper springs in new production cars (December?) I think I'd rather wait a few more months than deal with the repercussions of having defective springs.

The problem is not really that serious honestly. I won't even call it a defect. Apart from going over bumps, you won't notice it in normal driving. If u go over speed bumps slowly, u don't even notice it. Of course they should fix it, but don't let that spoil your fun. I don't even remember this issue anymore until i read this thread again.

I realize this, but it's still a problem. First, who knows what damage it causes to other parts when it happens. Second, I will need to have the springs replaced, and I don't want the dealer to have to mess with my new car. I have bad experience with dealers fixing one problem (or not even fixing it) while causing another mechanical problem or cosmetic damage. I accept it as inevitable on an old car, but not on a new car, and certainly not on a new >$100K car. If I need to wait a few months to avoid all this, I will wait...

I think I'm going to wait until the cars come with the new springs. I don't want to be driving with the springs jumping around, and I don't want my new car to be messed with by the dealership to replace the springs.

^ I have that 'squeek' on my 2011 550 front suspension only, esp. in the winter time when going over speed bump, no 'squeek' traveling on rough road

I have read through this entire thread and have yet to hear of someone with a 2013 model year (defined by having new navi, not month of build) complain of the problem.

Is it even remotely possible that those of us in the US soon to take delivery in September with a 2013 build will have the correct springs??? Is it guaranteed that every car delivered before December 2012 will have defective springs or just those that are 2012 model year? Thanks to anyone who can help lower my blood pressure.

Racer10 mentioned in another thread his 2013 had the sound. I am hopeful to get delivery of mine this Saturday (now been on a truck for over a week) and the highway from my dealer will be the true test. There are several make shift patches from the road buckling so driving the new beast home on that I should know pretty quick if there will be a clunk in my trunk...

I think a way to duplicate the sound is to be a slight incline or hill and accelerate . That's when I have heard the clunk coming from the trunk. One noise or sound, sounding like a wrench fell out of a toolbox ....clunk. I will listen for it some more tomorrow I am fairly certain I can duplicate it but what good does that do me?

I have it on my 2013. It does bother me quite a bit...maybe I'll go with KW V3 when I put some wheels.

2013 model
Picked up on Aug 31
Distance travled since 300km. Combination of highway, locals - incl. rough roads but no significant size potholes.

No clunk on mine (thus far). Lucky me !

If there is then I will mention to my dealer when I bring it in for my post break-in 2000km service.
