Low Dust Pads?
Getting tired of cleaning my wheels every two days , there's just so much brake dust it's crazy. Has anyone upgraded or know if anyone makes them for our cars?

What did you do to prep the rotors. As I understand it, these pads do not get along at all with the material left by stick rotors... Have you been pleased? I am so sick an tired of the dust from the stock pads...

I would spend 15-20 min on my hands and knees wiping down my OEM CP wheels every evening with the stock pads. (For a reference, I'm also the guy that cleans his windshield every morning) I had carbon pads on my E60 with great results so when I ordered my current wheels (forged with a brushed/clear finish) swapping the pads was a no-brainer. The carbotechs are a game changer. Brake dust is a non issue and you could easily go a solid week w/o noticing. I've got issues, so I still wipe down my wheel every evening but now all I use is a calf car duster "wheel duster" and the entire process is done in a few minutes. My driving habits are aggressive and haven't noticed any lose in performance with the new pads.

You can order carbotech pads through bimmerworld or many other suppliers. I can confirm that the XP8 compound is also significantly lower dust than the stock M5 pads. But if you limo drive (soft braking) you will not like them - they are squeaky if you are not an aggressive braker. Also the XP8 pad does not have a place for the wear sensor - you can have the shop put it out of the way so when/if you switch back. Not a big deal to check your brake pad wear the "normal" way through visual inspection. :-)
Now where is that darn oil dipstick again....? |

On the XPs, you really need to be on the track for a good bed in. Otherwise, the Indy advised no aggressive bed in on street after talking to the Carbotech engineer (if you need a name and phone number I can provide). No mention of mechanical brushing was given in the conversation, but in my case my rotors are in good shape with an even material distribution. With the XP8 I have not had any crazy wear on the rotors...but the higher XPs may be more prone to eat it. Anyway...I/We are getting off topic. To the OP - yes the stockers are dust crazy. Try some Carbotech 1521s. IF you are occasionally tracking, considers some XPs. |

I ordered mine today:
F: CT1648-1521 R: CT1469-1521 I got them from Speedfreaks in Nevada. I'm now trying to tackle this issue of rotor surface quality. I called Carbotech and they are adamant that the rotors be power sanded or turned for complete cleanliness, as these pads do not get along well at all with the stock brake residue material. BMW will not turn rotors, period. My vehicle only has 6,300 miles, and my rotors are naturally-perfect. That said, I do want a flawless surface for these new pads. I'm debating about what to do. I need to talk to the tech who does work on my car and ask him exactly what they do for prep in lieu of turning. I could take them to an auto parts house and have 1-1000th removed on all four while it sits in the air at the dealer, I suppose; I'd rather not. Finally, Carbotech told me that there is absolutely no wear in, nor need for anybody but me to drive it normally... In other words, install the pads and park it for me is what he advised...no joy rides for the tech... |

FWIW-
I am surprised that this topic, and subsequent cure is not much more discussed/prevalent on this forum: 1. Because the overwhelming majority of us have non-CP/non-ceramic brakes 2. These are positively the dustiest brakes I have ever seen in 30 years of owning performance vehicles... Surely, folks don't just tolerate it? It drives me "bat-sh--" crazy to have the wheels nasty just minutes after washing the car and wheels meticulously... Am I the only OCPD person here? |

I've had them on my M5 for almost a year now, almost zero brake dust. Stopping ability is just fine for the street and they have a much better bite (read lessened) than the stock pads.

An update: This was a wise investment; I'm still amazed as I was when I posted the below content that people actually tolerate this mess... I know I am hyper picky, but good grief, that was terrible... There is a better way...

Did you end up doing anything with the rotors prior to replacing the pads? This is my next mod.

Does anything compatible with OEM wear sensors have similar results to the Carbotechs?
