I'm in too; even in warmer ambient temperatures I've noticed warm up takes too long. It isn't cheap but the proper oil is something to indulge in.

I also use GC 0W-30. Put it in right after break-in service. I have about 2000 miles and no oil consumption after break-in yet.

OK, I have a 2013 M5, now has 11K miles.

Did the first service at 1,700 miles.
Took 1 quart at 4,000 miles
Another quart at 8,000 miles
And 0.5 quart at 11,000 miles

This is good just what i would expect, not to much Oil used.

Mine is burning 1 litre every 1,000 miles (approx), but I am using it for a lot of heavy traffic commuting in London, as well as the fun stuff. On a normal weekday, the car can be stuck in 1 to 1.5 hours of traffic in the morning and then cruise home for 40-45 mins at night. I've only done about 4600 miles and expect the consumption to diminish after about 6,000 miles or so.

Recently, I've got into the habit of using "M1" (everything set for aggression!) for bits of the run home in the evening, just because of the way it sharpens everything up nicely even though I can't do any great speed on the roads leading out of central London. Just love the way the car sounds and feels as it takes off (from standstill or any rolling speed). This may not help with oil consumption, but IT'S WORTH IT!!

Just FYI: I am at 11K miles and am still using a litre of oil every 1500 miles approximately.

Thanks Bish. Guess I shouldn't get my hopes up about the oil consumption dropping with time. The cost of putting oil in is not a concern; I just wonder what it says about the longevity of engine ...

I ask as I intend to run Hardish for the first 45 miles or so once Oil is hot.

Most of the guys on forums with High Oil usage have "gone by the book" and have "Blow by".

John, I did it "by the book", progressively increasing speed/revs but not exceeding whatever rev limit was recommended in the manual. I've had a few performance cars from new and have never overdone it on run-in; not one has ever used excessive oil. To be fair to my f10, it is used very heavily for commuting in terrible traffic (I can't emphasise this enough), without enabling start/stop, so my oil usage is bound to be very high. I'd be worried if I was just using the car on weekends and it was using anything like 1litre per 1,000 miles (for runs out on country roads etc). To give you some idea, I generally only do 150 miles each week (i.e. 30 miles per day Mon-Fri) and the car sits in morning traffic for 1-2 hrs every day - by contrast, on the run home (Mon-Fri), it gets stuck in traffic for about 20 mins and gets about 30 mins (max) of free flowing road use. So, you can see that I ought to be driving a Prius for my pattern of normal use. The conditions are far from ideal for a big, blown V8.

I reckon that if I just used the car as a weekend wagon, it'd use a fraction of the oil. IWhen I get a big chunk of time off work, I may do the experiment of seeing how much oil it consumes for only country road runs/motorway cruising.

I see what you mean Simon, I could not use a Car like the M5 in those conditions myself, luckily I am out of town and mine will mainly be driven that way.
So I will see how mine goes "Oil wise".

I hit the rev limiter under 50 miles. 100% by accident. Pulled away in a hurry but i had obviously been playing with the paddles just before I pulled over (mrs taking pics of the lakes), 50% throttle expexcting it to change to 2nd gear. NO. right round it went. Took me a few seconds to figure out what was going on before i changed to 2nd gear.

Other than that I more or less did what I was told but did used 100% throttle quite a bit but really going over 5500rpm as it says in the book.

So I suppose mine was, easy 40ish miles. Rev limiter before 50 miles then steady but using 100% throttle to pass cars etc. Is that a hrd run in?? not really sure.

I think thats about right, the trick is long slow downs in gear for suction and big throttle openings in high gears, allowing push and shove effect.

Since my break in I've added almost 9 quarts of oil and I'm a few miles shy of 1100. The panamera turbo's are similar in this consumption rate. If you're in m mode and push it to the limiter every so often you'll be adding oil like crazy. I tend to check the level every week and it's never stayed constant lol. High revving engines + turbos makes it worse than my e92 m3 and my x5 4.8is which was the first BMW I owned and learned that cars actually burned oil hahaha. Whatever, it's a beast and needs tender love and care + lube. Like any girl after a few hours....

Really, I have covered 2500 miles now Not used a drop.

I didn't add a quart until about 4,000 miles. Since then I've had to add a quart every 650 miles..... I'm at 5600 now, and got caught out this morning without a quart to add. I had to stop at a gas station and they only had Castrol 5W-30. They didn't have any synthetic, so i added the regular oil. I'm a little concerned, but hope the computer will monitor and notify if I need to change the oil as a result.

Anyone have any thoughts? I could go do a one off oil change if I need to.

3995 miles and used nothing. Weird cars these. Maybe it does make a difference how you drive them the first few miles ??

Depends how hard or how often you push it close to the redline, the more I'm in manually shifting gears and down shifting from really high revs the more noticeable it is.

I add my first quarts at 1000km just half way from the break-in service, filled mobil 1 full syn 5w-30.

I'm at 9,500 miles and I've added a quart about every 2,000 miles since the initial break-in service at 1,200 miles. I was fairly moderate with my first 1,200 miles, varying rpm often but not going past 6,000 rpm with full throttle more than a dozen times.
