BMW spent a mighty long time in the E series. And now we have the F series cars (at fairly early F numbering). So why is it implied that the next 5 / M will be G series? Just wondering.

They used to have much closer numerically numbering before. Today they have a numbering sequence that allows only one model in the same "group".
Before: E30 - 3-series E31 - 8-series E32 - 7-series E34 - 5-series E36 - 3-series E38 - 7-series E39 - 5-series New: E6x - 5/6-series E9x - 3-series F0x - 7/5GT series F1x - 5/6-series F2x - 1/2-series F3x - 3/4-series F8x - M3/M4 They will run out of available series much sooner for each letter designation with the new numbering system. But I don't know why they seem not to be going to use F4x, F5x, F6x, F7x and F9x? |

Also, all prototype models get a designation regardless of whether they make it to production.

That was because the F06 (6 series grancoupe) and F07 (5 series GT) both ride on the 7 series wheelbase platform. This is why they are both longer than the F1X cars.
There is a logic. It's not random. I actually think the new system makes sense. Each chassis has a unique identifier, and each generation also has a unique identifier. It will be a long time till they run out of letters given model cycles run for 6-7 years. They can go a century with this system and add in new models for 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x and 9x. M models will take some of those numbers - I suspect next M5 will be G70. And some of the new Toyota JV sportscars will also take up some numbers.

Because they are reserved for upcoming models! For example F5X is for 1 series (F52 is 1 series). Maybe i3, i8 ,...!!!
