best gopro location?

a bit off topic...

Going to track the m5 at watkins glen and just picked up a suction mount for the gopro.

Where is the best place you guys have found putting the cam? Obviously will have multiple shots over the 2 days, but any advice would be appreciated.

Mine is on my dashboard, but haven't tried to put it outside yet. Guess I was alittle scared it would come off. Question is, what is being used to hold it in place on the outside of the cars.

I bought the suction mount because I heard they are extremely strong and almost never lose grip. I have no idea if this implies grip under high speeds? I guess there is only one way to find out

I use a Contour GPS and mount it to the passenger sunvisor
Works great and is also out of sight as I didn't want in the middle of the windscreen
I have a few videos from my euro delivery at http://contour.com/users/jmh--2

Those videos are pretty cool. I love that they combine GPS location with video.

Why is there no sound?

GoPro suction mount. Interior on the sunroof upside down. You can see the driver and road.

Outside, I like the camera mounted on the front door looking forward with part of the fender and side grill in the shot. Don't worry about speeds, I've had mine close to the rated maximum (150MPH) and there were no problems.

Thx !
Some roads should look familiar

I decided to have sound turned off as most people probably wouldn't care for our conversation or choice of music

What do people think is the best camera to get? I was about to go get the Drift HD 1080. Contour+2 looks good too. I want to mount inside the car like jmh did.

I use the Contour, have both the early 1080P model and the new Contour +2. I imagine the suction mounts for the GoPro are similar to the Contour, and I mount mine on the inside upper front windshield quite far over in the passenger side, but pointed slightly to the center of the car. For the rear I mount it as high as I can in the center of the rear windscreen. It's fun to see what goes on behind as there's a lot you'll miss in the mirrors during laps. I hadn't ever thought of M54ccibo's suggestion of the sunroof though, that sounds like a great idea! It would be great if that shows the tach/speedo as well as the track!

I don't know if GoPro has this capability, but I'm able to use the Contour car charger and power the camera through the USB port, so there's no battery worries during an all day session. And with the 32gig card installed, that's about 5 hours of recording.

I have used the go pro upside down on the sunroof, and it works well. The only problem is you don't get a great view of the instruments. I tried the drivers side window (interior mount) which worked pretty well, and was unobtrusive, until I tried to lower the window

I place mine dropping down from the front of the sunroof on the passenger side. If you use the wide view, you can see the road as well as the entire dashboard.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the input. the suction mount to the sunroof near drivers side seems like the best angle as you can see instrument panel as well as the road. good to see hand motion too.

the other good view is underneath the rear view mirror and can get the view of the road as in 1st person gran tourismo.

my 2 cents on the gopro is that its a decent camera but the battery is crap and still seems to be a buggy camera. also filming at 60 fps the files are almost too unwieldy to use so I have left it at 30 fps.

will post video footage when I get back from the glen
