Security question ?

Hey,

So today my brother called me and told me he needed to use the M5, so I got home, and I got out of the car and he got in and drove away.

The thing is that, I had forgotten that I had the key in my pocket and he just took off without it, I didn't notice either until he called me 40 minutes later and told me that he had turned off the car and now he couldn't lock his door(but all of the other doors locked themselves) and of course, he couldn't turn the car on because he didn't have the key with him.

My question is, isn't the car supposed to shut off automatically once it notices that the key isn't inside the car or even near the car?
This to me is a huge security issue because if someone was to lets say, force me out of my car and just drive away with my car, with the key still in my pocket, he can basically just take it out of the country for example.

Is this normal or do I need to take it in?

Thanks

Keys

I actually find it normal. Its the same story on my e60 550i that I currently drive. When the car does not sense the key, it gives a warning message stating "key not detected, engine may not restart."

When I get the M5 I was going to test this out but I guess you already found out.

I honestly think this is how all key FOBS work. Another example is my Harley Davidson. It has a FOB key as well. I drove it to the gym. Realized I did not have key with me, so I turned around with out turning engine off and went back home to get it.

I had this happen to me with my Infiniti. I had to stop at my office early one morning to get directions to a meeting. I left the car running while I ran in. Thankfully, I didn't lock my car door. I unlocked the office, went to my computer and put the keys down. I got my directions and ran out the office door to my car. AS SOON AS I EXITED THE OFFICE through a door that lockes behind you, I relized I didn't have my keys. The kicker was I could see my keys on my desk through the window. I was able to drive home with out the keys on my person, and get my spare key and go to my meeting. So I see this as a normal thing with your M5.

Same way for Lexus infiniti Acura BMW Mazda that's all the brand I can confirm with you now. Sometimes I do actually prefer a traditional key.

The engine will not turn off automatically if a FOB is not in the car.
It happens quite a bit at dealerships when the place the car keys on the windshield, a mechanic starts the car and drives off, on the first corner the key might slide into the engine compartment or under the hood and suddenly the warning light will come (no remote detected).

You actually have 10 seconds to restart the engine if you stop it without a FOB in the car

It's for safety reasons.
Imagine If you drove off without the keys and the car shuts off in middle of a freeway.

+1, that's exactly why it works the way it does. Or imagine if your fob battery died or there was some brief interference. Wouldn't want your car to just die on you....

I do wonder what your brother thought the image on the dash of the key missing was?
