Performance exhaust etc.
Hello,
I am buying an used M5 this month. Just starting to read what kind of performance modification are available. A friend of mine did the programming on my RS6 and he will also do it on the M5 (he works at a racing department of one of the OEMs). What parts are available to help the programming like exhaust etc.? What do you guys recommend. I am trying to get more than 700 hp. Thanks Dan |

Here is my honest opinion:
- Stay away from downpipes if the car is a daily driver and/or you have a family. The smell is there and it will be very visible to everyone. You don't want your kids inhaling those fumes. - The tunes on these cars are amazing. So much power and they completely transform the car. The problem is twofold: Premature component wear (get ready to change your spark plugs every 10,000 miles and DCT clutch pack) and more importantly traction. The rubber and the chassis simply is not enough to handle all that extra power. You probably need a 325/335 rear tire and an entirely different differential and suspension. Car has so much power already, even in its stock form, it's faster than 99.9% of the cars on the road. - Exhaust makes a huge difference. I would suggest RPI or Eisenmann Race. Factory exhaust is very quiet and a good exhaust will transform the car. - MSR intake is amazing, totally transforms the car. Worth the price. |

Thanks! This is very helpful!
What am I losing if I do not install the downpipes? I think I will try the Eisenmann race version. Are there different options available? I am really surprised about the intake..that is really great what I read about it. Does MSR have a homepage? Are there any clutch upgrades available? How about different spark plugs? I run my RS6 with 700hp for about 50.000 miles now and had no issues at all so far. Thanks Dan |

Just read that I probably have to use the Eisenmann Sport instead of the race version because of Tuev certificate. Are there big differences in performance?

MSR does have a home page but I do not believe they have products listed on their. Youll need to PM him on here or hit him up on FB. His username is M6Beast on here. As for clutch upgrades, there are plenty available if you google search. SSP is a popular one. Spark Plugs - MSR Stage 2 tune does require spark plug upgrades and he provides those when you do the upgrade.

Thanks for the great help!
What do you guys do regarding suspension? I will update when I have found the right car. I have 3 to choose from at the moment. I would like to buy the one with frozen grey paint but it has 70.000 miles already...probably will go black or grey with about 20.000 miles. Dan |

Suspension wise, are you looking at a CP or Base M5? I don't think much needs to be done to the CP suspension.

What plugs are MSR tunes upgrading to? This is a first I've heard of people using anything other than stock.

The reason I went with eurocharged is because I am in Dallas and they are in Houston. I didn't want to go with someone that wasn't local in fear that if something happens I'll be stranded and have to ship my DME. Personally, if I have to ship my DME, I would be going with MSR or BR. Spark Plugs are recommended for higher boost applications. I know others are just re-gapping their plugs while others are going for a colder plug. Getting over 650 RWHP requires more boost.

IMO DP's should be on your shortlist. The performance gains and improved engine tone are indisputably rewarding.

No tuners are located near me, but I started leaning towards ESS because they're in CA and I could visit them for updates/revisions while down there for my yearly Bimmerfest trip. At what PSI are people either gapping or switching to different plugs? Any idea what the plug number is?

I noticed the turbo sounds immediately upon installing catless downpipes. It sounds like the spool is coming from my dashboard, I can hear the BOV just that much more and I'm sure it sounds even more pronounced outside.

We will get there.. I expect in the end I'll be running RPi downpipes and the MSR intake..lol then the difference will be BR vs MSR..

My best advice is get dyno sheets and ask for references. At the end of the day that's what it comes down too. I agree about the customer service, it isn't there with EC. That's something that you will have to consider especially since you are not local. Since neither ESS nor Euro are close to you, you should look into the Stage 2 MSR tune. The customer service is amazing, George is extremely knowledgable and they have done a ton of real world testing on their tune before releasing it. Also they are producing amazing numbers.

MSR isn't near me either, he makes M5 intakes and tunes...he'd have replied if he made X5M stuff by now.

Picked up my car today!!
Really nice and I ran against my RS6 with around 700hp. The M5 was actually a little little bit faster from 100-250 km/h. Now over the winter I will work on modifying it. This will be fun! Last edited by Dansc; 10-24-2015 at 10:28 AM.. |
