Electrical connector design

I don't have my car yet, but from all the pictures I've seen of any part with an electrical connection on it, they are really beautifully designed, the electrical connections I mean. The BMW motorcycles are built the same, and for you lucky others who might happen to also own a Mercedes or Audi, are theirs put together the same way? I wonder if BMW contracts with a major supplier, in Germany probably, who supplies others, or is it an in-house company? Anybody privy to that info?

Thanks JMH for the recommendations. I just got my car detailed today by Rick Nelson at Unique Car Care in Wakefield, MA.

I got a complete detail inside and outside, Opti-Coat 2.0, and XPel clear bra (full hood, bumper, side fenders, and mirrors).

The car looks fantastic! I highly recommend Rick and his team to anyone looking for a high quality detailer.

For those interested in having their door handles wrapped with gloss vinyl

for those in the Boston/New England area I had mine done by my local
BMW dealer (great body shop) and they charged ~160$

The first step is removing the rubber plug located on the door jamb portion of the door panel. Removing this plug enables access to the Torx15 bolt that secures the handle assembly in place. Remove the plug using your fingers or a nylon trim removal tool.

Now that the rubber piece is removed take a quick peek with a flashlight and locate the position of the T15 screw. Although our technician used a 18" long driver you can get by with a standard 7.5" tool. Simply remove the screw and move on to step number 3.

The T15 screw is the only major component securing the handle assembly to the door. The only other area secured to the door is the front portion of the handle. Now with light pressure pull the handle toward you as if you were opening the door.

As you begin to pull the handle you will notice the front portion of the handle is secured to the door via a 2 pin connector. These connectors are removed by unlatching the plastic tab on each pin. For this step our technician used a angled pick, but this step allows for some improvisation.

Now that the 2 pin connector you can safely remove the handle from the door.

Installation is simply the reverse procedure, but please note that while the handle is removed the door will not properly latch. Do not close the door while the handles are not attached to the car.

I like it both ways. I have a black met and the chrome is a nice relief from the all black. I did install IND gloss black kidneys and side grills because the stock car is too chromey for my tastes.

On a white I say wrap them black.

Lol. You can do that too. Looks good either way.

Actually white would look pretty tight. Just make sure your tint isn't full of bubbles and your clear bra isn't peeling off.

Then you are good to go.

Raising this thread from the dead. Does anyone have anything to report on the long term durability of painting those chrome strips? Has it held up ok? All the body shops I go to locally turn me away saying it will never hold up on that chrome surface.

I cant say anything about paint but I've wrapped mine and on my 535i and they held up for over 3 years now combined. Plus with wrapping it, you don't have to take it all apart and be out of a door handle for some time.

Did you wrap them as gloss black or where you able to find a wrap color that matched well.

I did carbon fiber wrap. I also did the fender trim as well (matches the front lip too)

Mine have been painted with automotive paint and I haven't had any issues with them for the year they've been on the car.

Did you do them yourself? Was anything special done in terms of prep? Obviously it can be done being IND did it. In fact they'll still do it if you send them your handles, but I live in an apartment with underground parking so I can't just not have door handles. Only thing I could think of would be if I sent in the rear handles, had them done, put those on the front and then sent in the front.

Attention!!!
Why in the hell would you pay hundreds of dollars to mute some chrome?

Go buy a can of black PLASTIDIP and spray the chrome ...you don't even have to mask off the area when you use plastidip because it just peels off at the seams.

this is something I've done on the first day of ownership on both of my f10's.

Why plastidip and not vinyl or paintjob?
plastidip is much easier than vinyl and you have no razor blades coming anywhere near your car. and vinyl has just always got some problem when you look at it closely ..plastidip is absolutely perfect ANDunlike vinyl when you pull plastidip off there's no glue residue to have to worry or deal with.
and unlike getting a paint job its completely reversible
and I would never bother pulling handles on and off of a car or paying that kind of money just to black out a very small amount of chrome..

Blacking out the chrome on the door handles of the f10 makes a drastic visual improvement because it makes the handles blend in and not stand out and look bulky.

Dont be dumb. use plastidip.

the only bits you need to buy paintjob painted are the reflectors.
i plastidip sprayed my quarterpanel grills as well.

and this being a new thread thats already 2 pages long on this simple, unimportant cosmetic mod is i think the first sign of the direction this forum is going now that there are a lot of cheap m5's on the market getting bought up now

just plastidip spray it yourself in 2 minutes and its perfect with no prep work and the plastidip is used to coat wrench handles and stuff so it's very durable and I've had it done for years and it's completely reversible and way easier than vinyl

alright we got a thinker!!

yes, plastidip is the answer unless you want like a carbon fiber pattern or something.

i've been plastidip spraying all the chrome on my cars for years why would you do it any other way it's completely reversible for when you go to sell it or trade it it protects the chrome it doesn't leave a residue I mean I can go on and on

it's crazy how 20 people have commented on this thread and nobody has any idea about blacking out chrome in 2019 /since 2012

plastidip comes in all colors and they have metallizers and glossifiers..

i'm not a plastidip rep or anything I just find it hilarious how much of a pain in the ass you guys are going through and asking so many questions and getting in a tizzy about how to color key a piece of chrome that is an eighth of an inch tall and 5 inches long

plastidip spray -just flat black. no glossifier. no metallizer.

nothing removed. done with my eyes closed in less than 5 minutes (all handles)

with the flash on you can see how perfect it is.

no worry with bubbles or removing anything or cutting and having a razor blade near anything

It's great that you are happy with that solution and I have used plastidip on many other cars but maybe people are looking for other options. It doesn't seem that insane to think that people would prefer a perfect body color match if it was a viable solution. Especially those who don't have black cars and prefer not to have the additional contrast.
