I'm a V owner, so I watched this with great interest. I can attest that the V with the automatic is a lead pipe cinch to launch from a standing start in "race mode" if you know what you are doing. I don't know about the manual since I've never gone for a pure acceleration run in a V that was so equipped.
I am certain that the F10 M5 will take the 2009-2012 V if properly launched, if for no other reason than BMW clearly had the V in their sites when they designed the new M5 and made sure they could beat the V from a standing start before they brought the car to market. Of course, the supercharged OHV 6.2 L LSA V-8 in the V can be bumped up with horsepower and torque at any time if Cadillac wants to take back the 0-60 or quarter mile crown from the F10 M5. The version of the LSA in the new Camaro ZL1 is already good for 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque, with even more available as demonstrated by the numerous aftermarket mods that take the engine up to 700 hp and beyond. That being said, I have no doubt that the M5 is going to be a superior car in every other way, even if GM takes the V engine up to 600 hp. I've enjoyed my time in the V immensely--it's superbly capable on the track and surprisingly refined on the road--but I'm really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the new M5 and then likely trading in my very low mileage V for what I'm sure will be the better car. |
