Front plate alternatives

Those of you that did not drill the front bumper but live in states where front plate is required what did you do?

Im going to go plateless at first, if it becomes an issues Id like to know my options. I know u can use the tow hook alternative where the plate is suspended using a bar. Are there options to mount a frame via the tow hook?

TIA

my cousin has a custom plate bracket on his e60 m5 that slides into the air opening on the front bumper when closed and comes out when he parks it. i think it's the best solution

If you are talking about the automated hidden car license plate, you better be ready to do several installs. A friend who has it has installed 5 on the same car in the last 3 years as he said it is not really made for cars that is driven most of the time especially so on a daily basis and in the Eastern U.S. where salt/sand is spread on the roads during the snowy winter months. If it's a show room car then it would be fine. I originally contemplated on using such but opted for the tow hook license plate install as that seems to be the most durable for front license plate installs without having to drill holes on the front bumper.

Double sides tape like they use in Euro plate works too.

Best solution is to register the car in another state then the local front plate law cannot be enforced.

South Carolina has low taxes and no front tag.

Its actually what I do now, since I have property in CT. Although CT has the law also, I never drive there. But after Hurricane Sandy and seeing all the totaled cars in my building garage (i moved mine) I just dont want to chance it anymore having issues with a claim. Plus CT has a dumbass property tax law on cars - Im guessing it will be over $2000 thae first year.

Not sure it should affect claim. With Geico I have my car registered in Montana and my insurance policy rated for my address in South Florida. They can rate the policy for whichever location you want. The only thing is they set the coverage limits to meet minimum requirements of both states. Not an issue for me since I run very high coverages anyway.

I Just came back from my EU delivery and the part for the front number/license plate was in the trunk, front number/license plates don't bother me. What bothers me is is a peice was added as an after thought like the many years of US Porsche rear bumpers.

The peice is black plastic. If it were body coloured like the M3 I had I would fine drilling it on.

Question - any one done this, who did it. Did the paint adhere, Do you have a picture?

I would think any body shop could paint it right? Arent most grills and such just plastic anyways? Maybe the IND guys can chime in.

ive been driving in california with no front plate for about 15+ years now.

only received ONE ticket, and that was a few months ago in San Francisco when i was legally parked, and paying $3.50/hour at one of the stupidly expensive street parking meters!! You would think they would be happy with the hourly, but i guess not.

turned out the ticket was about $90, but you could get it signed off/fix it and pay $10. Most cities out here, including mine, charge $35 to sign off on a fix it ticket, but one nearby town does it free. So no big deal.

Anyone know if using the tow hook for a plate would disrupt the front PDC sensor?

No.
It's when you give the ticket to a police and show them you fixed the problem.
Easiest way is to tape the plate on bumper than take it off again after they signed it.

I've been using the 3M Dual Lock tape on my 335 and now F10 without any issues at all.

I put two long vertical piece on the sides of the plate and it holds the plate there fine. I've done triple digit speeds and it doesn't budge at all. You can add a third horizontal piece in the middle if you really want it stuck on there but its not needed. Good thing about this is that you can remove it without leaving any marks on the bumper at all. For photoshoots you can also easly edit out two small velcro tabs instead of your entire front plate.

^ This sounds like a good inexpensive remedy. Do you have a photo of the plate clearance on the front bumper? The dealer installed a Rho-plate but it partially blocks the PDC sensor.

I hope we can do this in Canada. We can't even register the car in another city just to save insurance cost. Lots more freedom in USA.
