Coldlist is arguing that it is more than a number. And I agree with him.
I am not saying you are not a responsible driver, but even statistics show that younger drivers have more accidents. |

If I look at the number of fatal accidents per number of drivers in the USA by age category, then we see the following:
16 - 19 years old - 38 20 - 24 years old - 36 25 - 34 years old - 24 35 - 54 years old - 20 55 - 74 years old - 18 |

When I said age is just a number, I was referring to it as a 19 year old driving an M5 vs. a 35 year old driving one (I was trying to say age won't make you look weird, you're just doing you at the end of the day). I agree with aculeg87 in his statement that the younger population can and may be more inclined to be reckless. Those statistics may just as well prove him right. With that being said, there may be a lot of factors that come into play when dealing with statistics. For example, there may be a higher percentage of accidents in the younger generations because of more car ownership and usage than the elderly. Also, car accident statistics may be different if they were statistics based solely on "supercars" vs. your "average" car. I'm not saying that the previous two statements are true.. just trying to give an example. Again, I agree more than i disagree that the younger population is much more inclined to take risks and be more reckless, but I don't like to rely on statistics for 100% of the proof.

I think people aren't really reading those stats...in an 8 year span between ages 16-24 there were 74 accidents. In a 9 year span between 25-34 there was 24. Quite a difference. In a 49 year span between 25-74 there were 62. I t does NOT mean that everyone is irresponsible and conversely responsible. Any one of us could have a horrible accident at any time. Statistically however, younger drivers have more issues and I would see that as pretty good reason for concern about what type of responsibilities should be placed in their hands. I do not believe in RESTRICTING anyone but that does not mean the opinions are invalid. Adults have life experiences that children should benefit and learn from. It is a child's natural inclination to rebel. At 19 you are children. Don't take issue with that statement. Enjoy being young and if you do have one of these cars then be extremely careful to resist your instincts. We adults will remain validly concerned. My child will drive a safe vehicle (likely a truck) until he has proven that he deserves a sportier vehicle, based upon how he demonstrates responsibility. And that has zero to do with having money. Many people that I know, adults included, have plenty of money and zero responsibility. Funny how it often has the opposite effect.
When you are YOUNG you THINK you know EVERYTHING. As you age you realize you DON'T KNOW S**T. You will kick and scream about this statement now but if you write it down and put it in your top drawer you can revisit it at 35 yrs old and smile. Every single one of us 35+ knows this without exception. Did he call people above the younger years "elderly"?-lol! Last edited by ColdList; 03-05-2013 at 10:29 AM.. |

LOL my apologies, I was referring to the 55-74 bracket to make a comparison. Although I don't want to agree with you about the young generation knowing everything, you're absolutely right. You've seen both worlds. I've seen one and that's that..

I'm currently 19 and am fortunate enough to have the new M6 Cab. As long as you respect what the car can do you'll be fine. Speaking from personal experience it gets annoying when everyone thinks your driving your dads car and make remarks about it. But hey I'm not complaining at the end of the day I'm lucky enough to drive home in an M6. In my opinion it's a decision you have to make yourself.

If you're 19 and you're driving a $100+ car and you worked for it, good for you..Seriously. If you are that young making money like then you probably have some important responsibilities that probably keep you pretty grounded. If you were just handed it by your parents, then....I'll just keep that to myself.

Young drivers do crazy things. Even in less expensive M cars.
