No major issues and a very solid platform just use normal buyer caution, by the seller as well as th service history and record of the car.
If worried buy with warranty or factor failures happen. You are looking at $15k for second hand engine through to $45k for a full factory new motor. $10k will get you a DTC gear box. Level your risk against up front price. |

Also if you can find one that has a maintenance plan included that's a bonus You want to be able to enjoy the car and not have to worry about paying stupendous amounts of money if something does

Im in same boat as OP and hoping anyone can chime in with any relevant info. Any common engine issues or updates to be aware of? I know the non-M version in the 550i had some major issues (n63) before being updated to the n63tu.

There are no big issues as long as you follow the maintenance schedule. If you want extra protection I would recommend doing oil every 5k miles, especially if you drive it hard or have modifications.
Oil consumption is normal with these motors. And as other members have mentioned above, make sure you have a warranty!!
