About 10 days of bliss then the squeal occurred a couple of times. It is nowhere near as frequent as it was before the pad replacements but this is how it started before and gradually increased in frequency

I did notice that after a rain the squeal disappeared last month but the drier weather makes it more prevalent. Anybody else notice moisture makes the squeal go away?

Its so sad that our 100k+ brand new cars have squeaking brakes and we have to pay for alternate pads to fix this issue. Shame on BMW for this.

Same here, terrible squeaking just before coming to a stop... 5-10 mph

Anyone with a solution?

Anyone found a perm fix for the squealing brakes? Taken mine in twice now.. The dealer said they restored them to factory the first time and the squeal went away. That was at 2500 miles. It came back at around 3500 miles. Took it back and the dealer said there's nothing they can do. Brakes are performing per design, safe etc. The dealer further commented these are M cars with performance brakes and will squeal.. It's part of owning the car. That's crap on a 100k dollar car. Every time I come to a stop they squeal and its embarrassing and really gettin old.

Never had the experience of a squeak from my brakes since I got my M5 from ED October of last year. My mechanic has told me that squeaky brakes are usually caused by dirty pads/discs and can easily be solved by driving the car and occassionally breaking to remove the dirt, however, if the squeaks still persist then it could mean uneven wear on some parts or portions of the pads or discs which may need adjustment -- just relaying the info.

when I test drove a M5 before ordering mine it squeeked bad. I was like it that this car? Im assuming all of us will be dealing with this at some point or another. so long as they fix it free I'd be happy.

Yeah... That's the problem. Its a temporary fix at best. Always comes back. Still didn't hear much about the bed-in process. Is it necessary on this car and brakes? Does it help? Should I look at changing to a different pad? What about the carbon ceramic brakes? Same problem? What does everyone recommend for cleaning the brakes, rotors and wheels?

Perform a serious break-in on the pads and rotors, and perform some high speed stops without engaging the ABS periodically as well. Also keep the brake components as clean as possible by keeping the wheels clean. If you are not satisfied place Permatex ceramic anti-squeal compound lightly on the backing plates of the pads. Bottom line however is that for once BMW has placed some decent brakes on an M5 and high(er) performance brakes are far more prone to make noise. My car does it occasionally and I can make it cease by doing a 'hard' stop, but to be honest it doesn't bother me as its the nature of the system.

I, too, have been very irritated by the low speed squeal for almost a year. Dealer said brakes are fine. Had one track day in August and was hammering on the brakes all day and ever since no brake squeal. [Knock on wood] Hope it doesn't come back....keep in mind this track day was after putting 15k miles on the car.....

I talked to one guy from BMW NA at a track driving event about the brake squeal. Same story; performance brakes will squeal. However, he did offer an explanation. He says the brakes are designed for repeated hard stops. The problem owners are experiencing is because we don't normally do regular repeated hard stops and so brake dust builds up on the rotors which causes the low speed "light" braking squeal. He echoed what many are saying here; best way to stop the squeal is to stop the car hard several times. The hard braking maneuver scrubs the dust off the rotor thus no squeal until it builds back up under medium/light braking.

Again, I only talked to one guy but his explanation fits the experience I've had. Namely, one afternoon at the track and no squeal for a while. I assume then that a low dust pad would also ward off brake squeal by reducing the amount of dust build up on the rotor.

Thanks for the info.

Re: low dust pads. Many of them will degrade braking performance for the added 'benefit' of slightly decreased dust. Me, I'd rather just keep the wheels clean and stop hard a couple of times a week. At 12K miles my car almost never squeals when coming to a stop.

My dealership service foreman told me not much can be done on these annoying squeaky noise issue. The only solution to take the car on the empty parking lot and drives fast and brake hard for 1/2 dozen times. Eventually, this process will have to start all over again in a couple of weeks time.

I went to my dealer here in Luxembourg and same explanation. Although they will do a full cleaning and greasing again under warranty.

But yes I believe the issue is that we don't drive them hard enough, this cars are made to be abused.

Decide to take it to my independent mechanics and have the front brakes serviced today.

The major task he did was to sand down the brake pads, especially around the edges which he suspected bit of rust built up and caused the squeaky noises. After it was done, I took a relatively extended drive and the squeaky noise has not re-appeared but my mechanics said eventually, it will come back in a few months time and the whole process will have to be redone.

Last advise from him was to drive hard and brake hard on a empty parking once a week to minimize the rust built up, other than that, that's the nature of this big brakes.

So I have only 3500 miles on my 2013 when the brakes began to squeal like a garbage truck. Been to local dealer 3 times. They tell me pads and brakes are fine and BMW will not cover replacement pads under warranty simply for the annoying squeal. I have talked to customer care as well as regional "tech" to no avail. Has anyone had any success getting the pads and/or rotors replaced under warranty?

Have you broken in the pads/rotors correctly?
