I've had only a few responses to the M5 on the highway including thumbs up when passed on the interstate. I've only been challenged twice but I've only had it less than 2 months. Once by a Kia Optima (!?!?) and once by a Mustang GT.

Yes .... I did de-badge the M5 emblem. Why ? reason 1 I do like to have it in MY drawer and be able to look at it at times, but seriously I would hate if someone else would scratch my trunk lid just so that he could put it on his Nissan .
I think that most of M5 owners bought the car for that subtle look.
That actually happened to my E39 M5 many years ago. Badge stolen from trunk lid while grocery shopping.

my wife really does not know what I drive
she routinely stands outside mercedes, and acuras waiting for me to let her in,
kind of funny
i think bmw people do appreciate the subtle nature of the M exterior
i had a few visitors from japan recently, and when they saw my car they ran around the back
to see what model i drive
i think the car is fun to drive, and love it and appreciate a fine driving instrument
i count my blessings to be lucky

One thing I love about the M5 is how much of a sleeper it is. Does not garner the attention (both positive and negative) of something similarly priced like a used R8 or gallardo, but provides the owner with a thrill when driving it. It is something all of the M cars do very well (less the M6GC as pointed out by an owner above). That is a huge part of why I bought an RS7 instead of a gallardo or an r8, the attention is not for me. Its cool when people who know know, but I don't want the picture on the freeway or the people stopping me to take pictures or stuff like that, it makes me uncomfortable. I have heard of stories around town from friends who knew people (lol) who were stopped and asked questions by "enthusiasts" and then they were robbed or carjacked. Friend's gallardo gets insane amounts of attention from people driving and trying to snapchat or take instagram of the car. He is starting to hate it like I told him he would.

I think color has something to do with it. My DSB 650 attracts more general attention than my black E92 M3 ever did. The M3 was certainly noticed by car people (and fan boys), but the 650 is noticed by many - when clean. In the winter, when it's really dirty, it blends in more and doesn't steal as many looks.

Just yesterday, with the roads dry, I had her washed and quick detailed (by hand of course) and on the drive home, I again noticed people's heads turing as I drove by. Although I don't have my MCB M5 yet, IMO it will not stand out as much as a DSB 6, but perhaps more than a black M5?

I just picked this Frozen Red 2013 2 weeks ago and I must say it absolutely gets quite a bit of attention (at least in the Pearland side of the Houston area).

People are always looking and/or asking me questions about it.

Just installed gloss back side markers last night so a new pic is in order.

Stealth is a big reason I bought my car. If I still lived in LA, I would likely have an Aston or something along those lines. But in the Bay Area nice cars aside from Tesla are almost taboo.

That said, I never understood the whole debadging thing. I would never want to drive around "some 5 series". At least the M5 says I like to have fun and enjoy life and I'm not some mid level corporate chump.

You don't want to drive "some 5 series", or you don't want people to think you are driving "some 5 series"?

Debadging the car doesn't change what kind of car it is. I guess I just don't understand your comment.

Obviously the perception as debadging it won't change the actual car. I should clarify I understand many people buy a 5 series because it's a nice luxury car (and it is), but that's just not me or the perception I like to give off.

Never been a fan of the frozen colors, but your car looks amazing. Congratulations. Beautiful car.

i enjoy every bit of my M5, from the exhaust tip to the M5 rear badge to the MCB color to the front sports looks....the whole package. Thats why i got it. imHO i take the position that debadging takes a little "spice" out of the look from the car. The car is what it is and i don't see taking off the rear badge gets you any less attention. Im in southern calif and driving an M5 is not that big of a deal around LA or Orange county, where on any given day on the freeway you will see various models of .porsches, corvettes, Audi, including M3 and M5 and now im seeing several m4s, not to mention tons of 535s and 528s. In west LA or in the Hollywood area an M5 is as common as say the MB amg.

As to the rear badge issue....i have MCB, anybody see a MCB with the black M5 badge? How does it look?

Thank you very much, Bönz. I wasn't that big of a fan either until I saw this one in person. I hope the 'newness' doesn't wear off too soon.

My frozen grey M5 does get some attention. I tend to get thumbs up from other drivers (mostly German car drivers) and also it gets photographed a lot (although this may be because of my driving style!).

That said I find my Jag F-Type R Coupe gets more respect. People very rarely move out of the fast lane to let the M5 by, but they regularly get out of the way for the Jag.

Awesome color. I never thought I'd like frozen red on an M5 but it looks fantastic, especially with the black to offset it.

Funny my M5 gets folk moving out the way quicker than my 991s did.

Different country. I found the M5 had same effect in Germany. America is different. Very few people can tell an M5 from a 528i here, and also people in America hate BMW drivers. BMW drivers are probably Viewed as the most aggressive group of motorists in the US which is probably why people block them.

Obviously BS but that's the mindset.

I got a few compliments on it but the 991tts is complimented all the time. Definitely not a sleeper.
