NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V067000

Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC

Components POWER TRAIN

Potential Number of Units Affected 8,752

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2011-2012 135i Coupe, 1 Series M Coupe and 135i Convertible vehicles, 2011 Z4 sDrive 35i, 335i, 335d, 335i Coupe, 335is Coupe, 335i Convertible, 335is Convertible, 535i, 535i xDrive, 535i Gran Turismo and 550i xDrive Gran Turismo vehicles and 2012 740i and 740Li vehicles. The rear driveshaft constant velocity (CV) joint on the affected vehicles may fatigue and break.

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear driveshaft CV joint and, based on its production date, will replace it, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 27, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Quote:
According to the chronology that BMW submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company received its first complaint of this problem on August 2, 2016, when the driver of a 2012 BMW 750i xDrive reported a loss of power. An investigation eventually found the problem with the CV joint, and the company issued a service action for the affected all-wheel-drive 7 Series models.

On November 30, 2016, the company received a report of the driveshaft breaking on a 2011 BMW 335d that caused damage to the vehicle’s underbody and interior. Further research by the automaker showed three other incidents of the problem. An investigation indicated the same durability issue with the CV joint. Yet another case of this issue came to the company’s attention on January 24, 2017, involving a 2012 135i.

I don't understand how the M3 is not in this recall as it uses the same axles as the 1M...

Haha, I still haven't gotten the airbag recall performed! Always being fed the BS line that 'parts aren't available'

Really wanted to keep this car for the long haul, but I guess they just weren't made to last.

Sad.

This is about the driveshaft, which is different

Just discovered the actual CV joint is the same though. Hmmmm...but thats completely different from the joints on the rest of the vehicles. I think they've made a mistake putting the 1M in the list.

Ouch! I wonder if the driveshaft punched through the floor?!

Another waiting for an airbag here, but I guess I'll add CV joint to the list.

I dont think so, the CV joint is completely different on these cars.

Ours is shared with the E60 M5, F10 M5 and a few other M cars.

Please realize that the airbag recall is a supplier issue. BMW is actually doing the recall on Takata's behalf. Takata has an endless amount of airbags that need to be recalled across many Automobile Manufacturers. So although you may think the "parts not available" line is BS, in this case, it is not. The recall through all the affected Manufacturers is going to take Takata years to complete.

Only a mere 2 million BMWs are affected .. BMW should have gotten that done in what .. 30 days or so ?

Try not to get too impatient while scrolling down the list of updates to the article above.

The recall is not on the axles, it's the driveshaft rear CV joint. Read before posting misinformation.

Waiting 2 years for my x1 airbags to be replaced. BMW: this is recklessly unconscionable.

See the other comments above. This is not a BMW issue, it's a supplier shortage across the automotive industry. You can't install what's not even manufactured yet.

These parts have been available since day one. What's with the need to spread lies on the internet?

Fun!
The right CVD on my 2013 built F31 330d broke way before the 2nd August 2016. So the problem is older and cars built after 2012 are affected as well.
It snapped when pulling away from a traffic light at normal speed. Luckily, there was no further damage on the car.
Imagining this happened on the Autobahn @ Speed 200+ still sends chills down my spine!

OMFG! I'm supposed to ship my car to Italy Tuesday..... it can't ship with an open recall. I had to call BMWNA to get my airbag done. FML.

Might this have cause the vehicle to delay acceleration from a stop (or accel fro, very low speed like a rolling stop)? I have had issues where i will step on the go pedal and then it will take a second after the engine rpm revs to engage and i get a thunk and hard jolt forward and all is fine again.

Initially thoight it was an issue with TC lockup but this has me suspicious.
