I'm still amazed that the even with traction issues on a good day the F10 M5 is still able to reel off 0-60 runs of 3.6 seconds and 1/4 mile times in the mid 11 second @125mph range.

Add $500 BMS stage 1 and knock even more time. Just fricken amazing!

I'm still in the complete infatuation stage with my F10 M5 but in a few years I'll be looking at the F90 M5 to replace her so I'm pretty damn excited what I am seeing here. I fully expect the F90 to run to 60mph in the 2.8 second range.

I don't doubt this either. But let's wait and see how that single clutch 8Spd Auto holds up with more added power from modding. I expect over heating issues like a mother.

Nice vid-review! I'd suspect that the M5's tricked out AWD hardware/software will make it's way across many BMW models. I mean,...why develop this tech and not be able to sell it to the masses!

This is some great tech and BMW brought it to us first!

Transmission

So BMW has dropped the 7 spd DCT in favour of an 8 spd M automatic.
For me the M5's DCT in D was the one thing that really spoiled my M5 experience. In Sequential it was great but the programming in D really sucked (in my opinion).
If the new box performs as well or better than the ZF HP8 gearbox then the new M5 should be one hell of a nice drive

My wife's Audi A6 has the ZF 8HP gearbox and I hate it. I've driven a colleague's 550ix with the same gearbox and it's equally as bad. It's slow, the torque converter feels sluggish and the shift points are not adequate, unless you're flooring it.

The DCT is light years ahead, even in D mode...

Meanwhile BMW revealed the 8 series, which imho is the ugliest coupe I've seen, even for a concept. It seems somewhere down the road Mercedes took the right turn and BMW took the road Mercedes used to follow...

The F90 is gonna get beat up bad on what most people end up using this car which is highway pulls vs the modded F10's. The engine limits appear to be the same so F90 won't make any more power than the F10. Plus it's only 90lbs lighter. It's yet to be seen if the ZF can match the DCT from a shift-speed perspective and power transfer through gears.

The tech is >> F10 but with so much tech comes a whole mess of challenges for those who wish to mod.

Stock for stock the F90 >> F10.... no question.

I will never again buy an M5 < 2 years old - depreciation is not worth it.
You might be on to something actually.

The initial reviews I read from the Press Reports reported the F90 M5 being a staggering 220lbs lighter than the F10 M5 this is with the added 140lbs from the M xDrive system. However automobilemag.com is reporting only a 77lbs drop in weight from the F10 M5. It also says torque is at 553lbs/ft where other articles reports only 516lbs/ft. There is some obvious irregularities in reporting and it will be difficult to determine the actual curb weight, power, and torque until the official BMW Press Release which I suppose is coming out this summer or during the Frankfurt Autoshow. If the F90 M5 is truly only about 90lbs lighter than the F10 M5, that is almost negligible. Rule of thumb is every 100lbs equals 10hp or a full 1 second off of a lap time. There is still no word on what the doors are made out of, or the hood or the trunk. If they are anything other than aluminum then I will be sorely disappointed.

100lbs or 10hp is equal to one full second off a lap time? Doesn't that depend on the length of the track/lap? Is there a standard assumption I'm missing?

I always thought the rule of thumb was 100lbs = 10hp = 0.1sec 1/4 mile E.T.
