recommend me a portable external HD

I haven't bought an external since 2002 so I'm kinda out of the game. Kinda relying on the top sellers on newegg and staying within a budget since I'm only using the drive to store music, pics, and a few movies.

Drive doesn't need to be huge. I would be fine with 250 gig but a few 500 gig drives have caught my attention since they are similar in price. Would like to stay under $80. I do not have usb 3.0 so the drive doesn't have to have that feature but would be nice since I'll have 3.0 on my next computer purchase in a year or so.

I almost pulled the trigger on this one. Price is great. More than enough size. Problem was amazon reviews complained about a lot of usb 2.0-3.0 transfer problems and cord issues mainly because the cord is proprietary to toshiba.

Really doesn't matter. But anything less than 800-1T for ~$80 and youre getting ripped off.

Ive been looking for a new monitor and after reading 1000000s of reviews ive noted that most of the low reviews are from complete fucking retards who don't know shit about computers, so keep that in mind.

Seagate and Western Digital are good brands.

For purely storing data, it's almost better to buy a bare drive in the size you want, then buy the enclsure. That way you bypass all the garbage (IMHO) "backup" software that comes pre-installed on them.

Pick up something where the drive speed is 7200 RPM or greater. You'll thank me later . . .

Get a 7200rpm one for sure. Then just choose one within your price-range that has the best reviews. External enclosures suck in general, so one's not necessarily much better than another (unless you get a NAS and do some sort of RAID configuration).

check out slickdeals.net // fatwallet.com and they post a lot of deals on hard drives. But yea, you shouldn't pay more than $100 for a 1tb or over $50 for a 500gb.

I'd say get a 2.5" 7200RPM WD black and enclosure separately. I've had plenty of issues with Seagate drives in the past, so I always recommend to stay away from them. I've had no issues with WD yet.

you guys are funny. No p0rn for this hd. I deleted what little I had long ago. My wife is slightly computer retarded and will just click buttons. Well one time I hooked my laptop up to the tv and she was showing her parents how she can play our music through our sound system. Instead of opening iTunes she opens windows media player and clicks the prompt to find digital data to play in the player. I'm standing in the kitchen making burgers and all of a sudden I hear the opening music to one of my favorite porn movies at the time(thankfully not one that went straight into the action haha), I come out acting all what are you doing, you're not doing it right and shut everything down real quick with my meat covered hands and pop up itunes.

later that night I deleted my porn. Well not 10 minutes after that my wifes all like "uh I wonder what that was all about earlier, wierd how you have random stuff on your laptop." I blame it as its always out and we let anyone use it and she tries to retrace her steps to how it came up but since I deleted everything windows mp couldn't find anything haha. Now I stick to just streamed porn; spankwire, redtube etc.

If you format it as FAT32, it should work for both. I think you're limited to files of a size of 4GB in that case though.

Or you could format it as NTFS, in which case your mac can read, but not write. At that point, you can use MacFUSE and NTFS-3G software to also be able to write to it. I'm not too familiar with that process though.

And yes, that's the drive I run in all my notebooks and portable enclosures, and I've never had any issues with them.

Fat32 is a no go for me. My music file alone is almost 20gb. That would be a pain in the ass down the road when we switch to a macbook pro.

I would like to continue using this purchase once I move on to mac. from my quick research even apple seems behind the NTFS-3G program as you can find the download link on their site.

Any particular cases better than others? I was looking at the 12.99 acomdata case.

Anything in particular I would have to do other than put the drive in the case? Will it prompt me from there?

I think he meant 4GB limit per file, not total.

Connect the data and power cables within the enclosure to your HD, and then plug it to your computer. Then just format it in Windows or Disk Utility on the Mac. If you want it compatible with both, format it as FAT32.

Yes, 4GB per file.

Also, when you use a 2.5" HDD and enclosure, you're just making your own portable hard drive just like they do in the assembled ones you see on the shelf. You'll have a SATA and power plug in the back of the drive which will just slide into the associated connectors fixed to the inside of the enclosure. From there, you just screw the enclosure shut and hook up your USB cable. It's about as simple as it gets.
