RWD issues?

Hey guys,
I am about to start looking for a second car, and the M5/M6 are at the top of my list, along with the GTR and an older model R8. R8 is at the bottom because it will have to be out of warranty, and those repairs don't sound like fun to me. The M's are at the top of my list, but there is one concern I have.

I live in Houston TX, and there is some crazy weather here. I was wondering if anyone who lives somewhere it rains often has had any issues with their M cars and traction? I have never had RWD before, always had AWD, both in my cars and SUVs.

Could someone educate me on the topic of how these things drive in rain?

RWD M5/M6 in rain "is fun"
But, seriously the first month of driving M5/M6 with that huge power/torque is kinda scary... don't worry you will get used to it soon sunny day with MDM is as much fun as rainy day with DSC ON....
and yes there is traction issue... we all are living with this issue, but who cares? there are a world precedence beside that issue

There is a bunch of us that have them in Houston. It's not an issue as long as you stay out of large puddles. On wet days drive responsibly and it will behave like any other car. If you put your foot down be ready for a slide.

The other question I have is which is better? M5 or M6? and why? Besides matter of opinion, is either one actually better better?

I am used to power lol, but not in RWD. I have driven my friends GTR a few times and its pushing 1000 HP, and my X5M had a tune putting it at almost 700

Any insight would again be very appreciated!

M6 is lighter, handles better and faster then M5 but it's also only two doors.

The m5 is faster than the m6gc

If you need a 4 door the m5 is the way to go unless you will consistently have grownups in the back. M5s rear leg room is a bit of a jake for a full sized adult.

The i3 I yet drove had more legroom.

All and all the m5 was and is the correct choice for my needs.

Get an F80 M3. People love those here. Most are dropping their M5 to jump on that car. Guys like Spinny, Stealth, and Vic all made the switch.

Absolute nonsense. I wouldn't touch an M3. No interest. It shares a chassis with a support staff car. I don't sit in a cubicle and I don't want to impersonate someone who does.

Houston weather is not crazy... used to live in The Woodlands and work downtown for 5 years.
Had only RWD cars back then also... not sure what the big deal is about RWD there.

Leave traction control on, and control your right foot and you are fine.

Thanks for the responses! I think for my needs M5 fits better, seeing as a coupe was something I would rather stay away from if possible.

The reason I ask about RWD stability and control is because I have never driven a truly RWD car before, so I have no experience with it. Figured it would be smart to go ahead and ask, although I understand it might be a stupid question.

I moved from Orange County 3 years ago. At that time had E60 M5 and 997.2 GT3. I live inside the loop, just for reference. I noticed right away the difference in traction between southern california roads and houston. The roads seem almost greasy here. It got even worse when I moved on to the F10 M5 and now M6GC. Even when I had a 750Li for a bit the traction control would constantly kick on when accelerating. Maybe its the mix of asphalt they use here. I dont usually have the same level of traction issues on concrete, fyi.

I think most of the burbs have nice, fresh concrete and asphalt roads. Not so in town!

No problems in the rain. The M5 is quite stable. The one thing I'd mention is to keep adequate tread depth and you will be fine, even with our downpours.

Agree. No issues in the rain, just drive sensibly. M3 is for real estate agents. Don't event think about it.

I would think the asphalt are the greasy roads but it seems to me that most of the roads inside the loop are concrete. Broken down and narrow these days, thinking of say Richmond, West Alabama, San Felipe and Westheimer but I always remembered them as concrete. I think maybe it's the patina of oil droppings from cars over the years that makes them greasy. Where abouts are you actually getting to accelerate inside the loop? That's old Houston and there aren't many stretches where there isn't another car in front of you or some damn pothole or construction going on unless you are driving around in the neighborhoods. I am thinking given your list of cars that you must live somewhere near one of my listed roads.

but i do appreciate the responses. i went to momentum bmw on 59 and was shrugged off, and that kind of turned me off to the idea of the bmw. unfair and slightly overdoing it perhaps, but it is what it is.

I think the S8 is an awesome car, but I hear that they understeer like crazy.
