I'm also in the Chicago area and drove my M5 all winter in the city, the burbs, highway, etc.. I drove through a snow/ice storm from Milwaukee back to Chicago with no problems. No way would I buy another car based on AWD alone.

For anyone worried about how the M5 handles in the slushy stuff, fear not. This car was made for all seasons. Just get the right tires. I'll take my RWD M5 with winter tires over another car's AWD with all season tires any day.

I love the new M5, just shocked the S6 when chipped for 1500 bucks runs a 11.6 1/4 and sub 4 sec 0-60. Say what you want, I will take Audi interiors all day over BMW. I've had M5, M3s, S4, RS4s, a true lover of both cars for what they are....Leaning M5, but for 80k the S6 will be a rocket...toss in 4k of suspension upgrades if u want and look out. To boot, 20k less than the M5......we will see...still leaning M5, but will be my daily and I live in NE....

If you can swing it get the M5. You won't regret it.

If you can't then get the S6. A great car no doubt. Not iconic, but a great car.

Make sure you don't mistake it for the A6 S-line parked nearby in the parking lot. Sometimes you need the VIN to tell the difference from the outside.

Dare I say you should consider a 550i xdrive stage 4? LOL.

Ya, but what about AWD with winter tires??

I agree that the you can make the M5 work in winter, but why take the chance with a $100k + car? That's why I kept my S4 when I bought the M5. With winter tires, it's a tank in the snow.

Whilst this probably isn't the best place to get an impartial view. Having had an s4 recently, several Quattro saloons,e39 540i, e65 750i and now a f10 m5. In my opinion on balance I feel the bmw's are better overall than the equivalent audi models. With the m5 being in a different league to my previous cars.

Also agree with the comments that audi RS models are the direct comparator to M. With audi s models being the comparator to the equivalent top petrol engine. S4 to 335i , s6 to 550i.

The new rs6 I suspect will be a special car but believe this is only coming in estate /wagon version.

Correct with "Mental performance" quicker than the M5

I drive both a BMW and an Audi and --

In my opinion on balance I feel the bmw's are better overall than the equivalent audi models. +1

With audi s models being the comparator to the equivalent top petrol engine. S4 to 335i , s6 to 550i. +1

With that said, although they are not a one-for-one match, my S4 is about 80% of the M5 for about 60% of the cost. It's a very, very good car.

This is correct. The new RS6 will only come out from Audi as an Avante. There will be no sedan version of the RS6 even in Europe!

They are also making the RS7 which will be allowed here in the USA.

I'm still anxiously awaiting for the RS7 to hit the American shores, so we can see how it performs.

You must love swathes of plastic, for the Audi interior door and dash panels are plastic, whereas the BMW offers full leather.

Personally this alone would be a deal breaker for me. Plastic interiors remind me of Corollas.

I agree about full leather. It's a deal breaker for me as well. Audi offers it on their A8/S8 line, but don't forget that BMW only offers it on the 6 series, 7 series and the M5.

I think you can order full leather via Individual on the M3 and perhaps other models? Probably can get full leather on an S6 via Audi's individual program too.

Agree in principle though - I'd never buy a luxury car without full leather again. Even the plastic on the M5 steering wheel bothered me.

John,
Have you seen how much this car costs ?. £77k before options, so i bet over £90k when you have the, must have, desired spec. Quicker than the m5 ?, maybe out of the hole, with its 4wd, but rolling ?, i will wait and see. The M5 has surprised me, with just how strong it is, even as standard, and running in. Im sure its as strong as a MY10 GT-R. I wont be batting an eyelid about this Audi, M5 all the way, regards, SIMON .

you might have just had "extended leather", which is standard in the M5. full leather -dash, lower door panels, etc- was not an option on this M3.

I remember reading about a guy that got full leather on his M3 through the Individual program but it is definitely not an option on a normal M3. But it should be!

Not that much different than an M5 vs a 535 sport. They make them look too similar and is a bit irritating considering the 50k price difference between the two from a aesthetics only perspective.

The Audi exclusive program doesn't offer full leather on either the S6 or the RS7. I checked.

In my case it's just that I don't like finishes that look cheaper than my rental cars at hertz.

Hi Simon, I am still a "Committed BMW Man". I don't care how quick on paper the Audi is, I am going saturday to try and do deal on an M5 for September
BMW UK are still offering 50% down and 50% after two years interest free.
The only proviso is 10K miles per year, so I will probably pay it off after 3 months or so and be free.
