Parking Brake

Did you know that when the parking brake is on, all you have to do is put the car in R and it will automatically release when you press the gas pedal?

From my findings, it will only do this if you are backing up.... wont do it in 1 or D1.

It also works in D, traffic light stop I always pull the P brake because it will roll without applying brake, just apply a little bit of gas, the P brake will automatically release

It won't do it at the first start up but will from then on, including in S or D mode. I'll try the R trick when I leave work, but again think it won't allow this the first time after a start up.

And did you know that pressing and holding parking brake while moving will force-stop the car, like a manual brake. From my experience you can't make a u-turn because it seems to be intended for a straight-line emergency braking.

The woman who did my delivery at The Welt said that feature is so the passenger can stop the car of the driver has some sort of medical emergency and can no longer control the car. A necessary feature when BMW went from a manual handbrake that the passenger could reach to the electric parking brake.

Does anyone know where in the drivetrain the parking brake applies the stopping force, and how that is done? Is it at all four brake calipers, two brake calipers, the transmission?

The parking brake is using an electromechanical parking brake EMF via the rear calipers
(taken from the F10 550i parts bin)

Thank you. So that's why there is some difficulty with changing out the rear brake caliper for wheel clearance reasons. It all starts to come together.

Yep. So far there's no after market solution (to my knowledge) replacing the rear
calipers without loosing the parking brake.
Many tuners will have rear calipers on their website but in the end not sell them for the F10 M5
when we met with the folks at the M Studio we suggested to consider a two caliper setup like Ferrari on the next gen M5
