F10 2013 M5- Replacement engine
My car was making a rattling noise so I took it into the dealer. I was told they will need to replace the engine, which is coming from Germany.
Can I terminate the lease because of the engine problem? I leased the car in July 2012 for 3 years, so roughly ~8 months left on the lease. The car will be ready in 1-2 weeks and in the meantime I wanted to explore my options in this crisis!

What is the motivation for terminating your lease? Is it the time you will be without the car, or another reason?
Not 100% sure but if you could it would be at BMW's discretion, you always have the right to turn your car in early regardless and since you are getting toward the end perhaps the numbers look fine. |

The time without the car would be compensated by BMW.
My concern is the car not driving the same with a new engine. I suppose i'll find out in a few weeks. I had a 2004 Range Rover HSE that had an engine replaced from the dealer and it never drove the same. Quote:
The dealer said there was a problem with one of the cylinders on the engine. I'm going to the dealer Friday to get for info. I have 38,000 miles right now.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.
I'd see how it drives since they are compensating you for time without the car. If it doesn't drive the same as before the problem, I'd see what they can do for you. You may be close enough to the end for them to do a pull forward into another car. Of course, that requires that you want another BMW. |

Since it's a lease, you don't have to worry about that at lease end. You just turn it in, whether it drives the same or not. It's not like you're selling it, you're essentially renting the car for the lease term. If you bought the car outright or financed it, I think you might have a case if there are problems. Although, I'm not convinced that getting a brand new engine is a bad thing at all. I do know that BMW is finicky about about early lease release unless it's within one of their 3-6 mos promos. And that's if you're getting another BMW or you have a documented problem.

Can you keep us updated on the issue? What kind of rattle sound was it? Did it suffer from oil starvation? Ask them if the oil pump failed, what was the compression on that specific cylinder and if they did a leakdown test. Really curious about this one.

That stinks! Dang. Sorry man i would not want the car with a service shop replacing the engine. I'm sure the engine will be fine but the install, maybe not as good as the factory. I passed on a great deal for an X5M with 11k when i found out the engine was replaced.

I had a broken CV joint in my vehicle last year and the car was at the dealer for a month awaiting parts. Since it was a leased vehicle, I called BMW FS and told them of the problem. I was credited with one month's lease payment.

M5 engine rattle
I discovered Oct 2014 what seems to be the same rattle and was told by BMW that the engine will be replaced. My 2012 M5 has 86000 Kms and I wonder if this problem will start to occur on all M5's with a high mileage.
I paid cash and I am not sure what recourse I have. Not happy as a replacement engine will definitely devalue the car when I decide to sell. I will request compensation but this will not be completely satisfactory as I am concerned with further issues after engine replacement. This is my first M5 and I am really disappointed! |

I always sell my leased vehicles about a year from termination and always come out way ahead. You always have a lease buyout which is your residual + balance of payments. You can sell it or trade it in any time. If you get a dealer to process the sale, you will save in tax as well depending what state you are in. For example, i have a 2013 M5 with 3900 miles. Mint mint condition. Right now my lease buyout is $57434. I can sell it for a LOT more than my buyout. Thats why i buy special cars and take good care of them. Works out great! I would personally never trust a car with a dealer installed engine. I'd sell it or trade it in straight away.

Probably because it wouldn't qualify as a legitimate Lemon, unless you were type of individual that wanted to whine about it.
The car blew a motor, it happens, it's not like it has had the same issue repeatedly and has spent an extensive amount of time in the shop. That scenario would qualify for a Lemon. YMMV read the fine print for your State. |

^^^ once again an old thread but they are rt , in order to qualify for lemon law the vehicle must be the orig owner from new , 18000 miles or less or 18 mo's and an unrepairable issues w a minimum of 3 fail'd repair attempt's the one sealing the deal is the 4th time in shop for same issue or the car being laid up in shop for 30 day's + so 31 days would then qualify w all the other stuff in play 18k miles or 18 mo's or less of ownership by orig owner !!
so yea no !! |

Not only that, an extensive repair is most likely certified by someone above the dealership,...as BMW really hates expensive warranty repairs! So they will ensure that the local dealer gets the it right. Not all Techs are certified at the same level in at a given dealership, so, 1)your car's engine replacement will be used to facilitate 1 or 2 other Tech's growth in the process of tear down and install of various components of an F10 M5, and 2) I would expect a good dealership to use your car as an opportunity to do just such. Afterall, there aren't many F10 M5's having engine's replaced,...of which, we are thankful of that.

Friend of mine had his S63TU replaced and he loves his car. Hasn't had any issues and looking under the hook everything still looks the same as before it was replaced. They seem to have done a great job.
