I'll see M5 owners on the track... I'll be passing you in Italian style.

Lots of sour replies here...

There is no reason to refute or explain.

The two cars, as it turns out are different. The question was, by how much? And the answer is given.

I see nothing wrong.

If folks don't like the answer then maybe, they do not need to look.

I'm disappointed a 4400 pound sedan ran essentially the same time as the M4 on a short technical track . That's embarrassing .even worse a 4200 pound M6 coupe was 2 seconds faster than the M4 on this track running a 1:17.2.

well, first of all for sure BMW M engineers are not spending their time to read your comments to design an M car for you, but I see your point about weight saving. Second, For sure they will do something to save the weight in next generation by adding CF to save the weight, but for now CF is an expensive material and maybe it doesn't make sense to increase the price by adding CF. Finally if you want them to decrease the size of current M5/M6 and make them as small as M3/M4 (which is not either pig or heavy ), then what's the difference between M3 and M5 or M4 and M6? the same size, the same weight? just some food for thought

The M5 is a luxury sport sedan. IMO... the whole 'you can take it to the track' angle that BMW uses is purely for marketing.

Either way... cool video!
Yes marketing but BMW does a very large amount of testing and building M cars on their track...

Lots of people unfamiliar with Evo here? They've made a thing about doing these comparos that are apparent mismatches for a long time. Take them for what they are, a bit of fun.

p.s. Give me the M5 any day, it's my new favourite car after driving it on track and road a couple of weeks back. Epic.

Yes of course. They have to run through QA and R&D. Both of which are typically done in extremes by any manufacturer to ensure their product meets and typically exceeds their claims of function and quality. As well as SEVERAL other reasons that I won't get into.
Manufacturing 101. Look into it.

M5 is a luxury, bells, whistles and gadgets car that GTR can only dream about. There is a lot of things onboard of this flagship.

Just jump in the GT-R, touch and feel the materials and you will loose your apetite.....

Yes it is a stupid comparo, and people with technical common sense know that.

Well said. This is partly because Nissan used their budget to build a car with track-ready performance. So instead of paying for fine materials and fit and finish, your paying for performance. So yes, it SHOULD outperform an M5. In an M5 you are getting good performance (not great) but you are paying for more refinement, finer materials and creature comforts. So when someone mentioned that one of the reasons it was being compared to the GTR was because the price points are in the same ballpark... Well sure they may be... But their cost is allocated to different areas.
It baffles me that this is a hard concept for some to grasp.

And please... I am in no way defending the M5's performance. I could care less how fast it makes it around a track. Just as I don't evaluate (care about) the stereo, drivers assist features, leather quality, etc...of my track cars.

I can't believe how horrendous GTR interior is. I think Hyundai Elentra's interior is more appealing. I wouldn't buy GTR even it was like 40K. M cars are great at all things that make a car great. GTR hits good track times, and that's the only thing that it's good at. It's not even that fun to drive: the sound isn't that good, and worst of all, it's awd.

About the comparison here: on one side you have a big luxurious sport saloon with 4 doors, lots of space, nappa leather, ventilated seats, soft close doors, night vision, etc etc; on the other side you have a super fast moving plastic gadget.

Aok to compare on the track but results are as expected

my choice would be M5 any day, practical stylish comfortable lux etc

GTR is great as 2nd or third car for fun weekend but no way for DD

The fact that a 4 door family sedan is at all considered a competitor to the mighty GTR, says it all. The M5 won before the cameras even started rolling.

i would bet at least 70% would like it to be at least 400 lbs lighter.

BMW if you asked me failed on many levels with this m5.

I think you all are missing the real point of this EVO video. Who cares about the GTR? This debate is already 2 years old, give it rest. The only thing that makes the debate credible is that the M5 and the GTR are very very close in price, that's it. Yeah we all knew the GTR would be faster, but look at the time for the M4 for goodness sakes! The M4 is 900lbs lighter than the M5 Comp Pack, and 300-400lbs lighter than the GTR. Yet it is still much slower than the GTR and only 0.5 seconds faster than the M5. Anglesey is a tight technical track.

The M4 is absolutely the better drivers car and dynamically better at handling than the M5, but if one could afford both an M4 and an M5 that's a hard argument to make for either car if you could only have one or the other, besides price point. Both are comfortable on the street and both are very close to performance on the Anglesey track. Yes the M5 is a whale, but so was the Space Shuttle at an empty weight of 165,000 lbs. Yet the Space Shuttle could reach Mach 25. The F-16 Fighter Jet can barely go Mach 2. If the F10 M5 Comp Pack has this kind of performance at only 560hp and 4,400lbs (claimed), just imagine what a more powerful and lighter M5 will be like 5 years from now? It'll surpass M4 lap times, just like the F10 did with the E92 M3.

I guess my point is that I'm astonished by the closeness in time between the M4 and M5. Often times I feel like I need a lighter car for taking to the track in order for the experience to be more enjoyable, mainly because the East Coast sucks and going to the track is almost the only way to really enjoy the full performance of today's ///M cars, since there are no real mountains on the East Coast. Now, I'm thinking trading in an F10 M5 for an F80 M3 just so one could go to the track more, really wouldn't make much of a difference. If we only had a track the size of Nurburgring on each coast of America. Anyone want to start a kickstarter campaign to build these tracks?

Perhaps, but they also beat the CLS63 AMG, the E63 AMG and the RS7 on many levels including weight.

So while it has deficiencies, it is the best product -in its segment - on the market.

I agree.... The GT-R is a damn racing machine... The ///M5 is a gentlemens saloon... What is it about those facts these ppl don't understand? They need to put the the GT-R against 911 Turbos and other AWD cars!
