M5 vs SLS AMG
Well, had a little run in with a SLS AMG. Nutshell, I wasn't ready and he got the jump on me (wish we had just agreed to run) but it was close. He pulled about a car length off the start but the M5 hung fairly tight. That car put power down way better - launch control? I was in my D1 cruise settings: D3, DSC on, engine sport+.
Speeds got out of hand quickly on a surface street so I let up I was impressed with how competitive the M was against this car. Anyone else had a true run with an SLS, or SLS black that can comment?

Not surprising. On paper these cars look really similar.

Nice not bad to hang with a 200k+ supercar! I think if you had DSC off you might of pulled on him. I raced a z06 this week from 0-80 won by 2 lengths.

I'm impressed with your Z06 race. I've owned 2 of them, and they are pretty darn quick out of the box. It does however take a real hot shoe to get that thing through the gears smoothly and quickly.

So when you guys meet somebody on the street like that, do you go through the 17 step process to engage launch control? Or do you just take off traction control and modulate the throttle on your own?

I've never even seen an SLS AMG in the flesh, much less been able to test the M5 with one. Back in my street drag racing days there was an etiquette to even the informal, non money runs that would come up. Eye contact, a hand signal, or even some words with the window down to agree to an impromptu run. If we have too much ego on the line to risk losing, that takes the fun out of it. If I lose to an SLS or a ratty looking Corvette, so be it. It's still fun to have an even start to see which car has the best performance. Maybe Mr. SLS didn't want to chance that.

Same here, and also I didn't use launch control. I find the best setting without launch control are sport plus, comfort, and sport plus in MDM. Around 20-30mph I was breaking lose as he was about 2 cars ahead of me, after that I reeled him in. From 60MPH I Was pulling HARD. This was my first race from a dig.

I own an SLS but not an M5, mines an F12 M6 Cab. Compared to the SLS I do think their a little similar but after about 70 I think the SLS will pull away. What makes the SLS amazing is high speeds feel like nothing even compared to my F12. There are videos of SLS's pulling away from 458s. Granted the M5/6 are half the price, much more comfortable and have either 2/3 more seats they are in my eyes an even bigger accomplishment.

hahahaha! I like that. Finally got mine to engage the other day. Fairly worthless. Spun 1st and 2nd and grabbed in 3rd. If I simply started in D3/MDM I would have launched much more quickly. |

I can't imagine an M5 beating an SLS, but I bet they sure do come close! I love undercover speed!

Badass, my buddy has an SLS but I can't tell you the # of times he tells me he would just destroy my M5 LOL. I will have to offer up a little challenge once the weather warms up!
